Your expert pharmacist's advice on splinters
How to remove a splinter
- Clean the wound to avoid infection: To avoid any risk of infection, start by cleaning the wound with an antiseptic spray or soapy water (using a Marseille soap).
- Use tweezers: Use fine-edged tweezers. If they are too thick, they won't catch the splinter and may push it in. Disinfect the tweezers with antiseptic spray or 70° alcohol.
- Remove the splinter: grasp the protruding end with the tweezers. Pull gently in the opposite direction to penetration, to avoid breaking the splinter.
- Disinfect when the splinter is removed: Once the splinter has been removed, disinfect again. Leave the wound open to the air, applying a bandage only if rubbing is painful. Keep an eye on the wound for a few days, as a small piece of the splinter may have remained under the skin. If you notice redness or pain around the wound, swelling or fever, contact your doctor, as this may be a sign of infection.
