What is a Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are crown-shaped virions around 120 nm in diameter (2) that are transmitted by air, causing respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in humans, poultry and cattle. There are six coronaviruses, four of which are harmless, with mild flu-like symptoms, and two of which are highly pathogenic for humans. The latter two infect the upper and lower respiratory tracts, causing severe respiratory illness accompanied by fever, cough and muscle aches: the SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) coronaviruses. These viruses were already responsible for the 2002 and 2003 epidemics.

The new Chinese virus, identified for the first time, belongs to the coronavirus family. Since the outbreak of the epidemic in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. The World Health Organization (WHO) has named it "Coronavirus 2019-nCoV", it causes the same symptoms as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV.

The only way to avoid infection is to apply strict preventive and general hygiene measures.
