How to choose your organic essential oil?

An organic essential oil must be natural, i.e. ideally organically produced. In this way, you can be sure that your essential oil contains no pesticides or GMOs...

Organic essential oils (at least 95%) are stamped AB, Cosmebio or Ecocert. This is the guarantee of an additive-free product, with real traceability and strict control.

On the bottle, in addition to the plant's Latin name and botanical family, you'll find the chemotype - which defines the biochemically active molecule(s) and the majority - and the expiry date.

• the common name of the plant (lemon) and its Latin name (citrus limonum)
• the composition and origin of the oil, and if possible
• distilled plant parts (flower, leaf, stem, bark, root)
• main active ingredient
• extraction process (plant distillation or mechanical expression for citrus fruits)
• chemotype
• origin (geographical area or country)
• net quantity
• oil shelf life(expiration date)

Organic essential oils have many properties. They can have an impact on blood and lymph circulation, the nervous, digestive and hormonal systems.

They may play an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial or antiviral role, or be recognized for their anesthetic or mucolytic properties. Unless otherwise indicated, formulas are intended for adult, non-epileptic, non-asthmatic, non-renal or hepatic patients.

Pregnant or breast-feeding women should avoid using essential oils. Some essential oils mimic the action of hormones and are contraindicated in cases of a history of hormone-dependent cancer. Essential oils can be stored for up to five years, in a smoked glass bottle, hermetically sealed and protected from light.

How to use organic essential oils

When applied to the skin, organic essential oils pass through the skin's pores into the blood capillaries, which guide them to the target organ, enabling them to act deep down in the body. After absorption, they are then eliminated by the emunctories (organs responsible for eliminating toxins) such as the lungs via sputum or mucus, the skin via sebum and perspiration, the kidneys via urine and the intestine via stools.

It is therefore essential to use quality organic essential oils, 100% pure and natural, of controlled origin and chemotype, non-deterpenated, with EOBBD designation (which means that the Essential Oil is Botanically and Biochemically Defined), to store them in good conditions (hermetically sealed bottle protected from light) and to always use them diluted and in low doses.

Most organic essential oils need to be diluted to 1/5 (high concentration, reserved for medical use), more often to 1/10 or even 1/20 or 1/100 (low concentration, common for use in cosmetology). Do not mix more than 3 E.O.s in the same preparation.

As a general rule, organic essential oils should not be used on pregnant or breast-feeding women, especially during the first three months of pregnancy when foetal tissue is forming, or on children due to their enzymatic immaturity. For production animals and pets,aromatherapy must be adapted, as some species lack certain metabolic enzyme systems.

Some organic essential oils can be toxic and dangerous if the precautions for their use are not taken. Pregnant or breast-feeding women and children are advised to usehomeopathy, phytotherapy orhydrolatherapy (floral waters).

There's one essential thing to know: an organic essential oil is a liquid, concentrated and complex aromatic plant extract, obtained by steam distillation of aromatic plants or plant organs (flower, leaf, wood, root, bark, fruit, etc.). This is the distilled essence of the aromatic plant. As such, they concentrate active molecules, and it would be interesting to know about certain biochemical families that should be used with care:

• Organic essential oils rich in phenols (phenic acids), aldehydes and terpenes, such as lemon litsea, thyme ct thymol, ylang-ylang, etc., are considered potentially dangerous oils, as they are dermocaustic, allergenic and irritating to mucous membranes and skin. They are potentially dangerous because in their pure state they can cause burns, irritation and even skin necrosis. That's why it's essential to always dilute them no more than 20% in a fatty substance (vegetable oil, vegetable butter, etc.). Note that oral phenols are hepatotoxic.
• Organic essential oils rich in coumarins, such as parsley, angelica, celery, bergamot, bitter orange, etc., are considered potentially dangerous, as they are generally photosensitizing essential oils for the skin, meaning they can cause increased skin sensitivity to solar radiation, particularly ultraviolet rays, resulting in a skin rash. This reaction to sunlight is thought to cause mutations in the epidermis, leading to skin cancer. That's why it's essential to apply a photosensitizing essential oil about 6 hours before exposure to the sun, preferably in the evening at bedtime. In the event of a burn caused by an essential oil, it is not advisable to put water on it; dilute it immediately with vegetable oil!
• Organic essential oils rich in lactones and ketones, such as peppermint, lavender aspic, rosemary ct verbenone, mugwort, etc., are considered potentially dangerous, as the wrong dosage can cause neurological toxicity. Some may also be abortive (risk of miscarriage), depending on the level of ketone they contain.
• Organic essential oils rich in sesquiterpenols, such as cypress, sage, niaouli, carrot, etc., are considered potentially dangerous, as they are estrogen-like; that is, they stimulate the female hormones that act on the urogenital system, the mammary gland, the skeleton, the cardiovascular system, the brain, the digestive system, the skin and mucous membranes. However, they are contraindicated in cases of hormone-dependent cancers, mastoses, fibrosis, prostate cancer or a history of hormone-dependent cancers.
