What is Milbetel Puppy and Small Dog used for?
In dogs (small dogs and puppies), treatment of mixed infestations with adult cestodes (flatworms) and nematodes (roundworms) of the following species:
- Cestodes: Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus spp., Mesocestoides spp.
- Nematodes : Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Trichuris vulpis, Thelazia callipaeda (see specific treatment programs under "Dosage and route of administration"), Crenosoma vulpis (Reduction of the degree of infestation), Angiostrongylus vasorum (Reduction of the degree of infestation by parasites of the immature adult (L5) and adult stages; see specific treatments and disease prevention programs under "Dosage and route of administration").
If worms are present, remember to use a natural flea treatment that is effective for your dog, as these parasites transmit worms (Dipylidium).
Milbetel for Puppies and Small Dogs is a Vermifuge from the Biocanina veterinary laboratory, available only in pharmacies, in boxes of 2 tablets.
Milbemycin oxime belongs to the macrocyclic lactone group, produced by fermentation of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. aureolacrimosus. It is active against mites, the larval and adult stages of nematodes and the larvae of Dirofilaria immitis.
Milbemycin's activity is linked to its action on neurotransmission in invertebrates: in nematodes and insects, milbemycin oxime, like avermectins and other milbemycins, increases membrane permeability to chloride ions via glutamate-dependent chloride channels (related to GABAA and glycine receptors in vertebrates). This leads to hyperpolarization of the neuromuscular membrane, resulting in flaccid paralysis and death of the parasite.
Praziquantel is an acetylated derivative of pyrazino-isoquinoline. Praziquantel is active against cestodes and trematodes. It alters membrane permeability to calcium (Ca2+ influx) in the parasite, causing an imbalance in membrane structures and leading to membrane depolarization, almost instantaneous muscle contractions (cramps) and rapid vacuolization of the integumentary syncytium, responsible for integument decomposition (blistering). This facilitates elimination in the gastrointestinal tract or leads to the death of the parasite.
We also offer Dolthene liquid dewormer for dogs, at the best price in our online pharmacy.
How to use this dewormer
By mouth. Minimum recommended dose: 0.5 mg milbemycin oxime and 5 mg praziquantel per kg bodyweight, administered orally in a single dose.
The product should be administered during or after meals.
The tablets are meat-flavored and easy to administer (dogs and puppies usually take them voluntarily, even without food).
Tablets can be divided into 2 halves.
Depending on the dog's weight, the dose to be administered is as follows:
Weight Tablets
0.5 - 1 kg 1/2 tablet
> 1 - 5 kg 1 tablet
> 5 - 10 kg 2 tablets
In cases where heartworm prevention is useful, and treatment against cestodes is required at the same time, this product can replace a monovalent product intended for heartworm prevention.
For treatment of Angiostrongylus vasorum infestations, administer milbemycin oxime 4 times at one-week intervals. When concomitant treatment against cestodes is indicated, it is recommended to administer the product once and then continue treatment for the remaining three weeks with a monovalent product containing milbemycin oxime.
In endemic areas, if concomitant treatment against cestodes is indicated, administration of the product every 4 weeks helps prevent angiostrongylosis by reducing the parasite load in immature adults (L5) and adults.
For the treatment of infestations by Thelazia callipaeda, milbemycin oxime should be administered in two treatments separated by 7 days. If concomitant treatment against cestodes is indicated, the drug can replace the monovalent product containing milbemycin oxime alone.
What are the precautions for use?
Do not use in puppies under 2 weeks of age and/or weighing less than 0.5 kg.
Do not use in the event of hypersensitivity to the active substance(s) or to one of the excipients.
See also "Special precautions for use".
In very rare cases, systemic symptoms (such as lethargy), neurological symptoms (such as muscle tremors and ataxia) and/or gastrointestinal symptoms (such as vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and salivation) may be observed after administration of the veterinary drug.
Specific warnings for each target species
Professional advice should be sought to establish an effective worm control program, taking into account the epidemiological context and the dog's living conditions.
Parasite resistance to a particular class of anthelmintic may develop following frequent and repeated use of an anthelmintic in that class.
