Description of Cooper's Modified Alcohol

Cooper's Modified Alcohol is an antiseptic medication used to disinfect healthy skin and superficial wounds of limited extent.
Antiseptic agents are not sterilizing: they temporarily limit the number of micro-organisms. Ethanol at 70° has an antibacterial action on Gram + and Gram (vegetative forms) bacteria.

Different types of wound
The term "wound" refers to any break in the skin or mucous membranes caused by a mechanical agent.
Definition of a simple wound
A simple wound, most of which will be discussed here, refers to a superficial opening in the skin, or a scratch. A simple wound does not bleed profusely. It is not located near an eye or a natural orifice.
Types of wound
The term "wound" can cover a wide variety of lesions.
The two main types of wound commonly encountered and which you can treat yourself at home without consulting a doctor are cuts and scrapes (or abrasions). The latter are generally the result of friction caused by movement (e.g. a fall). Foreign bodies are often embedded in the wound. These debris and impurities increase the risk of infection.

GLOSSARY (summary)

alcohol
General name designating a family of substances which have the property of being able to be mixed with water and fatty substances. The most common alcohol is ethyl alcohol (ethanol), but there are many other alcohols: methanol, butanol, etc. The degree of alcoholic solution corresponds to the volume of pure alcohol present in 100 ml of solution, knowing that 1 glass of wine or 1/2 of beer (25 cl) contains about 8 g of alcohol.
When alcohol is used as an antiseptic, an unpleasant odor denaturant is often added to prevent drinking. Contrary to a widespread belief, alcohol at 70o (or even at 60o) is a better antiseptic than alcohol at 90o.

allergy
Skin reaction (itching, pimples, swelling) or general discomfort occurring after contact with a particular substance, use of a medication, or ingestion of food. The main forms of allergy are eczema, urticaria, asthma, angioedema and allergic shock (anaphylactic shock). Food allergy can also result in digestive disorders.

antecedent
Affection healed or always in evolution. The antecedent may be personal or family. The background is the history of a person's health.

antisepsis
Action to destroy bacteria, microscopic fungi or viruses present especially on the skin, mucous membranes and wounds.
The action of an antiseptic is not always immediate: a delay of a few minutes is sometimes necessary before the germs are inactivated.

antiseptic
A substance that locally destroys bacteria, reducing their numbers and preventing their proliferation. Some antiseptics are also active on microscopic fungi and viruses.

convulsions
Involuntary contractions limited to a few muscles or generalized to the whole body. They are due to excessive pain or stimulation of the brain: fever, poisoning, lack of oxygen, brain damage. Convulsions may be due to an epileptic seizure or high fever in young children.

seeds
A general term that refers to all microscopic organisms likely to cause infection: bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi.

mucous
Tissue (membrane) that lines the cavities and ducts of the body communicating with the outside (digestive tract, respiratory tract, urinary tract, etc.).

infant
Child from one to 30 months. A child under one month is a newborn.

dosage
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

terpenes
A general term for aromatic substances of vegetable origin. These are traditionally used for their respiratory properties (stimulating, expectorant, antiseptic) and their revulsive power when applied to the skin. The most used are camphor, menthol, eucalyptol, essential oils of mint, turpentine, niaouli, pine, anise, etc.
Some terpenes, and especially camphor, have been responsible for convulsions, respiratory pauses in the infant, in case of overdose. They can also cause behavioral problems in the elderly. These products should be used with caution at the extreme ages of life.
