What is the IUD Mona Lisa Cu375 Ro used for?
- Long-term contraception for women of childbearing age who are not pregnant and have a normal gynecological examination.
- Emergency contraception if risky sexual relations are less than 120 hours old. Associated pelvic infections must be taken into account.
- Post-partum and post-abortal contraception. The IUD can be inserted immediately after a voluntary interruption of pregnancy or spontaneous miscarriage, or within 48 hours of vaginal delivery, except in a septic context. In these cases, the risks associated with insertion are higher. Insertion can be delayed until the uterus is completely involved, i.e. 6 weeks after an abortion or vaginal delivery and 12 weeks after a Caesarean section.
The Mona Lisa Nt Cu375 Ro Copper IUD is an intrauterine device (IUD) consisting of a T-shaped polyethylene body and a copper wire wound around the vertical stem, with a copper surface area of 375 mm2. Dimensions: Mona Lisa Cu375: 19.5 mm ± 1 mm wide and 34.8 mm ± 0.2 mm long.
The Mona Lisa Nt Cu375 device is suitable for uteri between 6.5 and 9 cm in length. 48 The manufacturer recommends replacing the device every 5 years*.
- If inserted correctly, the Mona Lisa IUD is effective and safe to use in women at low risk of sexually transmitted infections.
- The flexible side arms are shaped so that the IUD adheres to the uterine fundus without distorting the uterine cavity or obstructing the fallopian tubes.
- Mona Lisa prevents pregnancy by hindering fertilization.
- The contraceptive effect is probably based on a sterile inflammatory reaction to a foreign body in the uterus.
- Intra-uterine and intra-tubal increases in white blood cells, prostaglandins and enzymes are observed. These changes influence sperm mobility in the genital tract, limiting their ability to fertilize. The number of sperm in the fallopian tubes, the site of fertilization, is reduced in women who use a copper-bearing IUD compared with those who do not. Consequently, the essential mode of action of this method is probably based on a change in sperm and egg quality prior to fertilization.

How do I use this contraception?
The Mona Lisa Nt Cu 375 Ro Copper Sterilet is inserted during a simple consultation, either by a general practitioner, a gynecologist or a midwife.
Before insertion, it may be useful to carry out a hysterometry test (a graduated rod is inserted into the uterus to assess its shape, dimensions and sensitivity). In principle, there is little or no pain in inserting an IUD. Women who have never been pregnant can take pain-relieving medication 2 hours before insertion. The insertion itself is very quick. It takes less than a minute.
