How do I use this contraception?

The Mona Lisa Nt Cu 375 Ro Copper Sterilet is inserted during a simple consultation, either by a general practitioner, a gynecologist or a midwife.

Before insertion, it may be useful to carry out a hysterometry test (a graduated rod is inserted into the uterus to assess its shape, dimensions and sensitivity). In principle, there is little or no pain in inserting an IUD. Women who have never been pregnant can take pain-relieving medication 2 hours before insertion. The insertion itself is very quick. It takes less than a minute.

Precautions for use

Mona Lisa® NT Cu375 Ro should not be used in the event of:

1. Suspected or confirmed pregnancy
2. Morphological abnormalities of the uterine cavity (congenital or acquired uterine malformations, fibroids deforming the uterine cavity, tumors, polyps)
3. Proven or suspected neoplasia of the cervix or endometrium
4. Undiagnosed genital hemorrhage
5. History of pelvic inflammatory disease less than 3 months old, sexually transmitted bacterial infection (STI) in the 3 months prior to surgery, current or recurrent genital tract infection, post-partum or post-abortal puerperal infection
6. Multiple sexual partners with high STI risk
7. Copper IUDs are contraindicated in patients with Wilson's disease or hypersensitivity to copper.

What is its composition?

The Mona Lisa Nt Cu375 device is an intrauterine device (IUD) consisting of :

• a body with 2 flexible polyethylene side arms measuring 35 mm in height for the Cu375.
• a copper wire wound around the 0.4mm-diameter stem, giving a diffusion surface area of 375mm2,
• a nylon monofilament attached to the rod, enabling control and removal of the device. The device is rendered radio-opaque by the addition of barium sulfate.

MONA LISA is placed in an inserter fitted with a measuring ring. MONA LISA Cu375-RO devices are suitable for uteri between 6 and 9 cm in length. The manufacturer recommends replacing these devices every 5 years.
