ELLAONE 30MG emergency contraception
EllaOne 30 mg tablet is an oral emergency contraceptive, which means it can be used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or if your contraceptive method fails, for example:
If your condom, or your partner's, has torn, slipped or come off, or if you've forgotten to use one,
If you have forgotten to take your pill on time (consult the leaflet accompanying your pack of contraceptive pills).
Description of ELLAONE 30MG emergency contraception
EllaOne can be used up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sexual intercourse if a contraceptive method has failed.
EllaOne works by modifying the activity of progesterone, a natural hormone. EllaOne is supposed to work by preventing your ovaries from releasing an egg. EllaOne is not effective in all cases: out of 100 women receiving EllaOne less than 5 days after unprotected sexual intercourse, around 2 will become pregnant.
EllaOne cannot be used as a regular contraceptive method.

Precautions for use
Warnings and Precautions :
Emergency contraception is a back-up method to avoid pregnancy and should only be used occasionally. Only limited information is available on the safety and efficacy of repeated use of EllaOne; it is therefore advisable not to use EllaOne more than once during the same menstrual cycle. Your doctor or other healthcare professional can advise you on the most appropriate methods of regular long-term contraception for you.
Tell your doctor, healthcare professional or pharmacist if you have liver disease. The use of EllaOne is not recommended in cases of severe liver disease.
Inform your doctor, healthcare professional or pharmacist if you suffer from severe asthma.
After taking EllaOne, if you wish to have sexual intercourse, you must use a reliable barrier contraceptive method, such as a condom. EllaOne will be ineffective if you have unprotected sexual intercourse again.
After using EllaOne, if you wish to start a hormonal contraceptive method such as the contraceptive pill immediately during the same cycle, you may do so, but you must always continue to use a reliable barrier contraceptive method such as condoms until your next period.
If you are currently taking hormonal contraception (such as a birth control pill), you can continue the current pack immediately after taking EllaOne, but you must use a reliable barrier contraceptive method, such as a condom, until your next period.
After taking EllaOne, most women menstruate on schedule, but some may menstruate earlier or later than expected. For all women, emergency contraception should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. There is some evidence that EllaOne may be less effective with increasing body weight or body mass index (BMI), but these data were limited and inconclusive. So EllaOne is still recommended for all women, whatever their weight or BMI.
It is recommended that you speak to a healthcare professional if you are concerned about any problems associated with taking emergency contraception. If your period is more than 7 days late, or if it is less or more abundant than usual, or if you experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or breast pain, or if you have the slightest doubt that you could be pregnant, you should take a pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant.

Our expert advice at the pharmacy
If you find yourself pregnant after taking EllaOne, it's important to contact your doctor. Your doctor may want to check that your pregnancy is not ectopic (where the baby develops outside the uterus). This is particularly important if, after taking EllaOne, you experience severe abdominal pain or bleeding, or if you have ever had an ectopic pregnancy, fallopian tube surgery or a long-term (chronic) genital infection (upper genital infection).
If you have concerns about sexually transmitted diseases, EllaOne will not protect you from HIV infection (AIDS) or any other sexually transmitted disease (such as chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, hepatitis B or syphilis). Only condoms can protect you from these diseases. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
