Your expert pharmacist's advice on acne treatment

What is the definition of acne?

A very common skin problem, acne most often appears duringadolescence. Most often benign, it can in some cases take on severe forms, with pimples on the face, neck, chest and sometimes back.

Acne reflects reactions in the sebaceous glands, which produce sebum, a lubricating substance. If there's too little sebum, the skin will be dry and easily chapped. If there's too much, skin will become oily and acne-prone.
In fact, excess sebum obstructs the sebaceous gland duct. This facilitates the proliferation of bacteria normally present in the skin, notably Propionibacterium acnes, responsible forinflammation (red pimples). When the clogged follicle dilates too much, this causes retention lesions(blackheads and microcysts). Deeper lesions (cysts) can leave scars.

How can I get rid of acne spots?

There's a natural remedy we all have in our cupboards that's just as good in the mouth as it is in cosmetics for its many virtues: honey!

Honey is particularly appreciated for its moisturizing and softening properties, thanks in particular to its 80% sugar content, which facilitates the binding of water particles. It also has regenerating powers, as it's packed with vitamins (A, B, C, D, H, K and PP), amino acids andfatty acids, mineral salts (iron, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, sodium) and trace elements (copper, selenium, zinc...). Honey is also useful in the natural fight against ageing, thanks to its rich antioxidant content. It is also a natural antibiotic. Finally, honey is suitable for all skin types, from the driest to the oiliest.

Depending on the action you're looking for, it's a good idea to look at the plant from which the honey is extracted. For example, in the case of acne, you'd be more likely to use Thyme honey, or the must-have Manuka honey for its high antibacterial, antispetic and regenerating action. Apply as a mask for 20 minutes, twice a week.
