Sun protection: does SPF 50 prevent tanning?

No, high sun protection does not prevent tanning.
While SPF 50+ is the highest SPF to protect skin from the sun's harmful rays, this very high level of protection is not synonymous with total protection. This is why the term "total screen" has been banned in Europe since 2006 on the labels of sun creams and oils.
In fact, with an index 50, UVB rays (those responsible for sunburn and tanning) still penetrate the skin. UV rays therefore activate melanin (the pigment that colors the skin), enabling you to tan.
So don't forget to pack an SPF 50 sun cream when you go on vacation, especially if you're fair-skinned.
