It is the plant most commonly used by people in the west of the island. In this Sakalava region, it's called either Motrobeatiagnana or Motrobeatianina, meaning "big fire in the entrails", as its entire aerial part has a pungent, burning flavor. Depending on the Malagasy dialect, it is also called Fanalamangidy "which removes bitterness" or Mangidymanitra "which smells of bitterness" or Sakarivohazo "ginger wood" or Sakaihazo "chili wood".
