Bergamot (Rutaceae family) is closely related to the bitter orange tree, but its exact origins are uncertain. In the first half of the 17th century, its cultivation spread to Calabria in southern Italy.

Bergamot oil acts as a neurotropic spasmolytic with an anticholinergic effect, reducing muscle spasms in various parts of the body, including the gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract.
This essential oil is involved in lipid regulation, reducing cholesterol levels and stimulating the secretion and evacuation of bile. It has significant antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity, and is also effective as anatmospheric antiseptic by diffusion. This essential oil moderates the inflammatory response by inhibiting gamma interferon and IL-4 production, making it useful in the treatment of asthma and other inflammatory conditions.
It is being explored for its potential in cancer chemoprevention and chemotherapy, due to its ability to induce phase I and phase II enzymes involved in the detoxification of carcinogens and inhibiting the processes of tumor promotion and progression. Bergamot essential oil also has anti-hypertensive and cardiac-regulating properties, and can be used as a mosquito repellent.
