antibiotic
A substance capable of blocking the multiplication of certain bacteria or killing them. The spectrum of an antibiotic is the set of bacteria on which this product is usually active. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not susceptible to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were extracted from mushroom cultures: penicillium (penicillin), streptomyces (streptomycin). They are currently manufactured by chemical synthesis. Antibiotics are divided into families: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines (cyclines), sulphonamides, aminoglycosides, lincosanides, phenicolates, polymyxins, quinolones, imidazoles, etc.
Inappropriate use of antibiotics may lead to the development of resistance: use antibiotics only on medical prescription, respect its dosage and duration, do not give or advise another person an antibiotic that you have been prescribed.

antiseptic
A substance that locally destroys bacteria, reducing their numbers and preventing their proliferation. Some antiseptics are also active on microscopic fungi and viruses.

convulsions
Contractions involuntary limited to some muscles or generalized to the whole body. They are due to excessive pain or stimulation of the brain: fever, poisoning, lack of oxygen, brain injury. Convulsions may be due to an epileptic seizure or a high-grade fever in young children.

à © epilepsy
A chronic seizure disorder related to an electrical activity abnormality in a group of cerebral cells. Its manifestations vary in intensity, ranging from the sudden drop in attention (absences, or small evil) to loss of consciousness accompanied by abnormal muscle movements (convulsions, or great evil). Partial epilepsy, as its name suggests, does not concern the whole body: the jerky movements affect only one or more muscle groups.

pharyngitis
Inflammation or infection of the pharynx.

dosages
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a medication according to the age, weight and general state of the patient.

sugar
General term for different substances, the most widely used of which is sucrose. Other sugars can be contained in the medications: glucose, fructose, lactose, etc. Glucose is the sugar used by the body; it is the only one to circulate in notable quantity in the blood.
Sweeteners (false sugar) are allowed in diabetics or people on a diet, and are very low in calories.

terpanes
General term for aromatic substances of vegetable origin. These are traditionally used for their respiratory properties (stimulant, expectorant, antiseptic) and their revulsive power when applied to the skin. The most used are camphor, menthol, eucalyptol, essential oils of mint, turpentine, niaouli, pine, anise, etc.
Some terpenes, and especially camphor, have been responsible for convulsions, respiratory pauses in infants, in case of overdose. They can also cause behavioral problems in the elderly. These products should be used with caution at the extreme ages of life.
