Who is Dr. Valnet?
Dr. Jean Valnet, whose fame resonates throughout the world of natural medicine, marked his era with his dedication to phytotherapy and aromatherapy. His life and career illustrate a precocious vocation reinforced by the truth of the field.
Born in 1920, Jean Valnet had an exceptional destiny from an early age. The son of a soldier and a schoolteacher, he was introduced to natural remedies as a child by his grandmother, a midwife and herbalist. At the incredible age of 9, he decided to become a doctor, an ambition that would guide him throughout his life.
In 1943, during the Second World War, Dr. Valnet joined the Resistance. He became a doctor at the service of the maquisards and villagers deprived of healthcare due to the occupation. His mission was to provide care in precarious conditions, an experience that forged his determination to use natural resources to heal.
After the war, Jean Valnet undertook medical studies, earning no fewer than seven diplomas, including general medicine, forensic medicine, occupational medicine, psychiatry, colonial medicine, microbiology and hygiene. He also became a military doctor and was sent to Germany, where he examined concentration camp survivors. Then, at the height of the Indochina War, he was appointed army surgeon. It was here that he first experimented with aromatherapy to treat war wounds.
After these seminal experiences, Dr. Valnet returned to France with a deep conviction: medical truth lies in nature. He decided to dedicate his career to exploring this path. On his return, he was appointed Chief Medical Officer to the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, where he set up a team of researchers to analyze the therapeutic virtues of essential oils. This period marked the beginning of his in-depth knowledge of aromatherapy, based on a rigorous methodology. In just a few years, he illuminated phytotherapy with the light of modern science.
At the age of 39, drawing on his unique experience, Dr. Valnet left the army to devote himself to what he called "total human medicine". He advocated a holistic approach to health, encompassing diet, phytotherapy, aromatherapy and all natural therapies, provided they were scientifically proven. He opened a medical practice on avenue Kléber in Paris, where he prescribed preparations based on plant extracts and essential oils as a complement to conventional medical treatments.
Dr. Valnet became the main driving force behind the development of aromatherapy in France and worldwide. In 1964, he published his first book, "Aromathérapie - Se soigner par les essences de plantes", which was translated into six languages, including Japanese. Even today, it remains the essential reference for aromatherapists.
Dr. Valnet was much more than a doctor. Through his books, conferences, radio and TV appearances, he advocated organic farming, healthy eating, environmental protection and a medicine open to all therapies. His vision was immediately recognized internationally. More than 25 years after his death, his message and legacy have never been more relevant, modern or revolutionary. The whole world is becoming aware of the dangers of the chemical industry and the importance of preserving the environment, proving the man nicknamed "Doctor Nature" right.
Thanks to his ceaseless efforts to expand and disseminate his knowledge, Dr. Valnet gave rise to two major currents in aromatherapy: the French school, based on a clinical and scientific approach, and the Anglo-Saxon school, focused on well-being. Medical aromatherapy, initiated by Dr. Jean Valnet, is reserved for the competence of a phyto-aromatherapist physician, the only one authorized to establish a diagnosis and an appropriate prescription. Family aromatherapy, or well-being aromatherapy, teaches the use of low-dose essential oils in everyday life for a variety of treatments.
Dr. Valnet's legacy
While Dr. Valnet's scientific and medical legacy was taken up by his many medical and pharmaceutical students in France and around the world, it was Marie-Thé Tiphaigne who was entrusted with the mission of perpetuating his famous preparations. She continued his work by formulating nine ready-to-use essential oil preparations to soothe everyday ailments. Today, Dr. Valnet's legacy lives on thanks to those who share his passion for natural medicine and the use of nature's resources for human well-being.
