Our advice and opinions from pharmacy experts

The Gingko, a hint of immortality

Ginkgo is known to prolong life. His fame is established in all Far Eastern medicine. From China, it passed to Japan and Korea from the 12th century. There he became a sacred symbol of longevity. Today research shows its interest in a set of problems related to advancing age, whether cognitive problems (memory, concentration, prevention of Alzheimer's) or the fight against free radicals.
Ginkgo biloba is the oldest of the tree species whose specimens are still identical to their ancestors. It already populated the planet 300 million years ago. Thanks to a few individuals found in ancient Chinese temples, it has been able to be relocated almost everywhere in the world, especially as an ornamental tree. Exceptionally resistant to environmental stresses, it can live up to 1,000 years and reach 40 to 50 m in height. It seems to resist pollution well and easily adapt to urban environments.

The oldest medicinal plants in the vegetable kingdom are, as Darwin said , a veritable "living fossil". Ginkgo is part of a plant group that developed in the Carboniferous, during the heyday of giant horsetails, 200 to 250 million years ago. Among other things, this tree has the advantage of being able to age for millennia . If we generally agree that 4000 years is a respectable age for a…
