Our advice and expert opinions
Diarrhea is very common in dogs. However, it's important not to ignore them, as a dog's health can deteriorate rapidly following severe acute diarrhea.
Acute diarrhea in dogs is characterized by an increase in the frequency and/or volume of stools, which are often more liquid.
Diarrhea is said to be acute when it has just appeared, or has lasted for only a few days. If it has lasted for more than three weeks, the diarrhea is said to be chronic.
In the event of mild diarrhea, there are simple steps you can take.
Diarrhea is the body's natural reaction to eliminate toxins. If the body is constantly rejecting what it contains, it's best not to try to fill it up. So put your dog's digestive tract to rest by fasting for 24 hours. But be careful not to exceed these 24 hours, as prolonged fasting could be harmful to your pet. And during this fast, keep your dog hydrated. Always provide him with plenty of fresh water. If he's not drinking enough, offer him a chicken or fish broth to encourage him to drink more.
The next day, serve him his meal, dividing it into 4 to 6 meals spread throughout the day.
