In homeopathy, the letters "DH" and "CH" correspond respectively to the methods of dilution to the tenth (Hahnemannian Decimal) and to the hundredth (Hahnemannian Centesimal) developed by Samuel Hahnemann, father of homeopathy, and used in the production of this homeopathic medicine.
The European Commission and ESCOP recognize the use of passionflower to relieveanxiety, nervousness, muscle spasms and neuralgic pain. These two organizations have also approved its use to treat digestive and sleep disorders of nervous origin. However, no clinical studies have confirmed these applications.
Although the chemical composition of passionflower is well known, the constituents responsible for its tranquilizing properties have yet to be determined with any certainty. The plant contains various substances likely to have this type of effect: indole alkaloids, flavonoids and glucosides. According to pharmacist Jean-Yves Dionne, it is most likely the synergy between these different active compounds that explains passionflower's effectiveness. In fact, each of them is present in insufficient quantities to explain the plant's effects. Recent work has led to the discovery of a new molecule (BZF moiety) which may be responsible for the beneficial effects of passionflower. These new data have yet to be confirmed, but point to an interesting explanation for the effects of passionflower.
