Our advice and expert opinions
What's the difference between relining and rebasing?
The relining solution is suggested when your dentures are in good condition and not too old. It can also be applied if your gums and jaws are not too resorbed.
Relining involves filling the gap between the denture and the gums, a precision operation designed to adjust the denture as closely as possible to the new shape of the gums and jawbones. With relining, the position of your teeth and the look of your smile remain unchanged, and your comfort is improved.
Relining involves changing the entire acrylic of the denture to fit the new shape of your mouth. The teeth on the denture remain the same, as do their positions. The process completely modifies the structure of the denture. In this way, the desired comfort and stability are achieved.
Why choose denture relining?
All denture wearers have the unfortunate impression that their dentures don't fit properly.
They suffer in their daily lives, at mealtimes or in conversations with intimates, from the constant thought that their dentures are in danger of coming loose.
A total denture is held in place by the physical phenomenon of suction, created by the intimate contact between two surfaces with a liquid element as a binder. The surface of the resin prosthesis never changes, while the gums evolve with age, shrink and eventually no longer match the shape of the prosthesis, creating a void that is detrimental to the prosthesis's stability.
There are two solutions to this problem:
- redo the prosthesis based on a new impression (an expensive option)
- reline the denture with resin after taking a new gingival impression.
