Bergamot is the fruit of the Bergamot tree, a small, delicate shrub that grows mainly in southern Italy. Its small, round fruits are a melt-in-the-mouth variety of pear. The oil is extracted from the skin of the fruit just before ripening. Its fragrance is an irresistible blend of citrus and floral scents.

Bergamot essential oil has many virtues, such as:

What are the precautions for use?

  • Bergamot essential oil is irritating and dermocaustic if applied undiluted. Dilute 20% in a vegetable oil before application (20% essential oil in 80% vegetable oil). Do not expose to the sun for 12 hours after application.
  • Caution: if you use Bergamot essential oil for more than a few days, there is a risk of drug interference.
  • Bergamot essential oil should not be used in cases of gallstones. It may be nephrotoxic if ingested in large doses over a long period of time.
