Cinnamon has been exported from the Orient for 4000 years. Renowned for its fortifying and purifying virtues, its presence is mentioned in traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia written 2,700 years ago. Cinnamon is also found in the Bible as part of the "sacred balm". Since then, cinnamon has been a must-have and, according to Taoists, a means of attaining immortality.
Chinese cinnamon essential oil has many virtues, including
- Major anti-infective (trans cinnamaldehyde): cinnamon essential oil destroys fungi responsible for pulmonary infections and candidiasis. It is effective against respiratory, intestinal, digestive, urinary and gynecological infections.
- Anti-parasitic (trans cinnamaldehyde): Cinnamon essential oil is effective against lice and nits, as well as intestinal parasites (worms).
Chinese cinnamon essential oil is renowned for its remarkable antibacterial action. Studies, including one conducted by Diego F. Firmino in 2018, have confirmed its effectiveness against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Cinnamaldehyde induces ion leakage from bacterial membranes, reinforcing its antibacterial power. It also has an anti-biofilm action, a significant asset in the fight against infections.
Chinese cinnamon essential oil is effective against lice, nits and certain intestinal parasites. Studies, including one by Andrew R. Williams et al. in 2015, have highlighted the action of cinnamaldehyde on the larvae of Ascaris suum, an intestinal worm. This compound instantly immobilizes the parasites, eliminating them in a matter of hours.
Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of Chinese cinnamon essential oil against Candida albicans, a fungus responsible for many fungal infections. In just 15 minutes, it limits the growth of this fungus. It also acts on dermatophytes, helping to manage skin mycoses.
Although few studies have been conducted on its mechanism of action against viruses, research has confirmed its efficacy against various human viruses, includingherpes and the flu virus. Chinese cinnamon essential oil is used as a sexual stimulant, thanks to its tonic and aphrodisiac properties. Cinnamaldehyde stimulates progesterone production in men, as demonstrated in a study by Yoko Iwaoka et al. in 2009. In addition, its vasodilatory effect creates a sensation of warmth when used in sensual massage.
Chinese cinnamon essential oil also has antioxidant properties, helping to neutralize free radicals and prevent oxidative stress.
