Our advice from professionals and natural health experts

Constipation refers to a decrease in bowel movements to less than three per week. A feeling of discomfort in the belly, cramps and bloating may appear. It becomes difficult, even painful, to go to the bathroom. Stools are hard, not very abundant and their expulsion seems incomplete.

Even if, at home, all is generally well, the simple fact of changing environment, of adopting a different rhythm of life, can be enough to make an intestinal transit capricious. And especially slowed down.

Management of this kind of constipation episode should never exceed 10 days. The body must not become "accustomed" to stimulation for exoneration.

LEXICON (summary)

corticosteroids
Substance close to cortisone. Natural corticosteroids, necessary for the functioning of the body, are produced by the adrenal glands. Synthetic corticosteroids, chemical derivatives of cortisone, are used as powerful anti-inflammatories.

addiction
Psychic or physical need caused by taking certain natural or medicinal substances. This state can be accompanied, upon stopping the intake, by various symptoms, grouped under the term of withdrawal syndrome.

diuretics
Medication allowing increased elimination of water by the kidneys. Most often, this loss of water follows the loss of salts caused by the drug (salidiuretic).
Diuretics are mainly used in the treatment of high blood pressure, while their mechanism of action in this disease is poorly understood. They are also prescribed in acute or chronic heart failure, edema and other rarer conditions.
These drugs cause loss of sodium and potassium (except for some of them called "potassium sparers"). Their prolonged use therefore requires regular monitoring of blood potassium, to avoid heart problems that could result from hypokalemia (lack of potassium in the blood). Lack of sodium is another possible consequence, but rarer at usual dosages, of prolonged use of diuretics; it is also detected by a blood test.

fecal impaction
Stool plug in the rectum or colon. It is to be feared in the elderly or constipated, or those who stay in bed for a long time. It exposes you to a risk of obstruction of the digestive tract.

gastroresistant
Qualifies certain tablets or capsules in which the active substance is protected from the acidity of the stomach.

stimulant laxative
Powerful laxative but irritating to the digestive tract, responsible for a loss of mineral salts (potassium, etc.) by the body. Its prolonged use causes dependence: it is no longer possible to have a bowel movement without medication. In the long term, permanent lesions of the inner lining of the intestine may appear (laxative disease).

potassium
Mineral element present in large quantities in the body.
See also: kalemia.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to the body's hypersensitivity to a drug. Allergic reactions can take a variety of aspects: hives, angioedema, eczema, rash reminiscent of measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort from a sudden drop in blood pressure.

sodium
Mineral substance which can form salts, in particular with chlorine (sodium chloride, or table salt).

torsades de pointes
Severe heart rhythm disorder, favored by:
  • hypokalemia or situations favoring it: severe and prolonged diarrhea, repeated use of stimulant laxative, etc.,
  • too slow a heart,
  • a predisposition visible on the electrocardiogram,
  • taking certain medications.
The main drugs likely to cause torsades de pointes are: quinidine, hydroquinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, ibutilide, certain neuroleptics (amisulpride, chlorpromazine, cyamemazine, droperidol, flupentixol, fluphéenazine, haloperidol, levomepromazine, pimozide pipimazine, pimozide , sulpiride, tiapride, zuclopenthixol), cisapride, citalopram, escitalopram, diphemanil, domperidone, hydroxyzine, chloroquine, halofantrine, mizolastine, pentamidine, moxifloxacin, erythromycin (IV route), spiramycin.

symptomatic treatment
A treatment that suppresses or alleviates the symptoms of a disease without addressing its cause.

heart rhythm disturbance
Severe or mild abnormality in the frequency of heart contractions. Extrasystole is a contraction occurring just before or after a normal contraction, often perceived as a slight shock in the chest. Fibrillation is an irregular and disordered contraction. Other disorders exist: torsades de pointes, Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome, Bouveret's disease, tachysystole, flutter and atrioventricular block, etc.

track
  • Route (route of administration) used to administer the drugs: oral, sublingual, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intradermal, transdermal route.
  • Set of hollow organs allowing the passage of air (respiratory tract), food (digestive tract), urine (urinary tract), bile (bile ducts), etc.
