You've probably put paracetamol in the bottom of your bag, your desk drawer or in your home's medicine cabinet. If you have a headache , painful period, or other pain, you will likely take a pill. What are its properties?

Paracetamol is the most widely used molecule in France due to its analgesic (which fight against pain ) and antipyretic (which fight against fever ) properties.

Paracetamol is used for its effectiveness against a large number of pains of moderate or low intensity, whether acute or chronic. It is even recommended as a first line to fight migraine .

LEXICON (summary)

analgesic
Pain reliever. Analgesics work either directly on the pain centers located in the brain, or by blocking the transmission of pain to the brain.
Synonym: analgesic.

anticoagulant
A drug that prevents blood from clotting and therefore prevents clots from forming in blood vessels.
Anticoagulants are used to treat or prevent phlebitis, pulmonary embolism, certain infarctions. They also help prevent clots from forming in the heart during rhythm disturbances such as atrial fibrillation or in the event of an artificial heart valve.
There are two main types of anticoagulants:
  • oral anticoagulants, which block the action of vitamin K (antivitamin K, or AVK) and whose effectiveness is controlled by a blood test: INR (formerly TP);
  • injectable anticoagulants, derivatives of heparin, whose effectiveness can be controlled by the blood assay of anti-Xa activity, Howell's Time (TH) or Cephalin Kaolin Time (TCK) depending on the products used. Regular dosing of blood platelets is necessary for the duration of use of a heparin derivative.

antipyretic
Medication used to lower body temperature during bouts of fever.

caffeine
Stimulating substance present in certain drinks and certain drugs.
One cup of coffee contains about 100 mg; a cup of tea, about 50 mg; a cola drink, 20 to 30 mg. The duration of action of caffeine varies from person to person; it is shorter in smokers and longer in women taking the pill or in pregnant women.

renal failure
Failure of the kidneys to remove waste products or drug substances. Advanced renal failure does not necessarily translate into a decrease in the amount of urine excreted. Only a blood test and the creatinine test can reveal this disease.

palpitations
Abnormal perception of irregular heartbeat.

dosage
Amount and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to the body's hypersensitivity to a drug. Allergic reactions can take a variety of aspects: hives, angioedema, eczema, rash reminding of measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort from a sudden drop in blood pressure.

overdose
Taking an excessive amount of a drug exposes you to an increase in the intensity of side effects, or even the appearance of specific side effects.
This overdose can result from accidental intoxication, or voluntary intoxication with the aim of suicide: it is then advisable to consult the poison control center of your region (list in appendix of the work). But most often, the overdose is the result of an error in the understanding of the prescription, or the search for an increase in effectiveness by exceeding the recommended dosage. Finally, untimely self-medication can lead to excessive absorption of the same substance contained in different drugs. Certain drugs expose this risk more particularly, because they are considered (wrongly) as harmless: vitamins A and D, aspirin, etc. Stopping or reducing medication intake makes it possible to eliminate the disorders linked to an overdose.
