How is ocular rosacea treated?

Ocular rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the eyes and eyelids, often associated with cutaneous rosacea. An often overlooked factor in its development is the presence of microscopic parasites called Demodex. These mites, although naturally present on human skin, can play a significant role in aggravating the symptoms of ocular rosacea.

Demodex are microscopic mites that live mainly in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the skin. There are two main species: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. They feed on dead skin cells and sebum, and are generally harmless in low concentrations.

Symptoms of ocular rosacea associated with Demodex include:

  • Redness of the eyes and eyelids
  • Burning or itching sensation
  • Dry eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eyelid thickening and crusting

To prevent re-infestation, it's crucial to maintain good eyelid hygiene and treat any early signs of ocular rosacea.
