What is Ladrôme Burdock Extracts Organic Mother tincture used for?
A member of the Compositae family (Asteraceae), burdock, otherwise known as black broth, mothweed or giant's ear, is a hardy, biennial herbaceous plant with abundant, very broad, alternate leaves that are denticulated at the tips.
The origin of the word burdock remains unclear, and there are many interpretations. The word burdock comes either from the Greek arktos, meaning "bear", or from the Lyonnais "bardane", which could be understood as "bug", or from the Latin barrum, meaning "mud". What's certain is that the plant is best known for its fruit (a kind of spiny ball), which clings to all kinds of clothing and is the origin of the famous Velcro.
From its Latin name Arctium Lappa (or Arctium majus), it can be recognized by its characteristic large, heart-shaped leaves and tube-shaped red or purplish-pink flowers surrounded by hooked bracts. Widespread in Europe, with the exception of the Mediterranean basin, it thrives in limestone soils and is frequently found along roadsides and in alpine meadows. Native to Asia and Europe, burdock grows easily in most parts of the northern hemisphere.
The parts of the plant used are its roots and leaves. Burdock is mainly used in phytotherapy for its root, which concentrates its medicinal virtues. Before flowering, it has a number of properties, including "sudoriparous, depurative and diuretic action, which helps fight skin infections. Burdock root contains a polysaccharide called inulin, as well as phenolic acids, polyacetylenes and flavonoids.
Burdock helps treat certain skin conditions linked to excess sebum production. Anti-inflammatory: burdock is also said to act "on chronic rheumatic joint inflammation and gout, and facilitates the elimination of inflammatory substances when combined with other anti-inflammatory plants.
Burdock also has a draining, sudorific and depurative action, helping to restore radiance and luminosity to the skin. It contains phenolic acids, which help eliminate toxins. Burdock is also appreciated by people with sugar metabolism disorders, whose levels it regulates. To enhance its effects, burdock can be combined with other plants, notably wild pansy.
Fresh burdock leaves can be used to relieve itching caused by insect bites, on damaged skin and in certain inflammatory conditions.
