Your expert pharmacist's advice
Borage (Borago officinalis) is an annual plant long cultivated in Europe and North America. It is widespread throughout the Mediterranean basin. Some sources attribute it with North African origins. Its Arabic name (abu rach) means "the father of sweat", an obvious allusion to its sudorific properties. Because of its diuretic properties and action, borage has often been used as a depurative. Borage oil is a source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a member of the omega-6 family of fatty acids. With 20-26% gamma-linolenic acid, it is a better source of omega-6 than evening primrose oil, which contains only 7%-10%.
Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a plant native to the temperate northern regions of North America. An edible plant with beneficial properties, it is also cultivated for its appearance.
Evening primrose produces yellow flowers with a very pleasant fragrance, and the fruit contains oil-rich seeds. The flower opens at dusk and fades at dawn, earning it the name "night beauty". Evening primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid. GLA is thought to be directly linked to the production of series 1 prostaglandins (PGE1), which reduce the mechanisms that trigger inflammation.
