Advice
Different degrees of burn
Doctors speak of degrees of burn depending on the depth.
- A 1st-degree burn is the most superficial and corresponds to classic sunburn. Only the epidermis is affected. Under the epidermis, there is vasodilation, an increase in the diameter of the blood capillaries. The skin is red and painful, but intact. There is no particular blistering.
- A 2nd-degree burn is deeper. It is characterized by bubbles (or blisters, or phlyctenes) that appear either immediately or in the hours following the burn. The bubbles are filled with a transparent liquid. They are surrounded by a red zone: erythema. The dermis, the deepest layer of the skin, is affected.
