Advice from your expert pharmacist

Using cold to treat a hematoma

Cold is an ideal anti-inflammatory reflex for treating a hematoma. To relieve the bruise you can use a thermal pad to limit the formation of bruising.

What is a hematoma or bruise?

A bruise or hematoma is a pocket of blood under the skin, in a muscle or in an organ.
A bruise (“bruise”) causes more diffuse blood under the skin than a hematoma, with much less swelling. After a few days, this blue-purplish stain turns greenish then ocher yellow.
Bruises under the skin ("under the skin") appear as bluish lesions swollen by the presence of blood. They result from the rupture of blood vessels larger than those affected when bruising occurs.
Depending on their location, hematomas may be accompanied by other signs.

  • When the eyelid is involved ("black eye") and the local swelling is significant, it can go as far as closing the eye completely and preventing vision.
  • When the hematoma is located under a nail (“subungual” hematoma), for example on the big toe, it appears blue and very painful on pressure or spontaneously (throbbing pain).
  • When the hematoma is inside a muscle (direct shock or strain), the muscle may swell to the point of compressing the nerves or blood vessels that descend into the limb.
