The stomach: a veritable acid bath.

Once in the stomach, food undergoes a number of transformations over several hours. The aim is for it to leave the stomach as a mush and pass into the small intestine, where digestion continues. To achieve this, the stomach secretes hydrochloric acid, which breaks down food, especially proteins, and enzymes, which also attack proteins. It's a veritable acid bath in which food is cut up, stirred and reduced to a pulp.
How do the stomach and oesophagus protect themselves from the surrounding acidity? The stomach secretes mucus to line its lining, preventing acid from attacking its walls. The esophagus, on the other hand, has no such protection: if its lower sphincter is fragile, it will be sensitive to any upwelling of gastric juice.

LEXICON (summary)

NSAIDs
Abbreviation for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Family of anti-inflammatory drugs that are not derived from cortisone (steroids), and the best known is aspirin.

antacids
Drug that neutralizes the acidity of gastric secretions or blocks the glands responsible for the secretion of acid.

antibiotics
Substance capable of blocking the multiplication of certain bacteria or killing them. The spectrum of an antibiotic is the set of bacteria on which this product is usually active. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not sensitive to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were extracted from fungal cultures: penicillium (penicillin), streptomyces (streptomycin). They are currently produced by chemical synthesis. Antibiotics are divided into families: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines (cyclins), sulfonamides, aminoglycosides, lincosanides, phenicolés, polymyxins, quinolones, imidazoles, etc.
Inappropriate use of antibiotics can promote the development of resistance: use an antibiotic only on prescription, respect its dosage and duration, do not give and do not advise another person an antibiotic that you have been prescribed .

dialysis
A method of purifying blood in cases of severe renal failure, provided mainly by the use of an artificial kidney.

diarrhea
The strict medical sense of diarrhea is "stool delivery too frequent and too abundant". In fact, common sense equates diarrhea with the notion of fluid and frequent stools. Normally, the stools are pasty, but the emission of liquid stools or barely formed, without pain or particular associated disorder, is not pathological. We can talk about diarrhea when the liquid stool emissions are repeated during the day, and that the needs are imperious or painful.
Many drugs can accelerate intestinal transit and make bowel movements more liquid, without this undesirable effect being really worrying.
Antibiotics can alter the digestive flora, essential for digestion, and cause diarrhea more or less awkward but benign. The effect appears immediately or after a few days of treatment. A form of severe and exceptional diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, can be observed after antibiotic treatment; this condition results in the emission of mucus and false membranes (resembling skin flaps) associated with abdominal pain; constipation may replace the initial diarrhea. Pseudomembranous colitis can occur several days after stopping antibiotic treatment and requires urgent medical advice.

inflammation
Natural reaction of the organism against an element recognized as foreign. It manifests locally as redness, heat, pain or swelling.

renal failure
Inability of the kidneys to dispose of waste or drug substances. Advanced renal failure does not necessarily result in a decrease in the amount of urine eliminated. Only a blood test and the determination of creatinine can reveal this disease.

mucous
Tissue (membrane) lining cavities and ducts of the body communicating with the outside (digestive tract, respiratory system, urinary tract, etc.).

sugar
A general term for various substances, the most common of which is sucrose. Other sugars can be contained in medicines: glucose, fructose, lactose, etc. Glucose is the sugar used by the body; it is the only one to circulate in a notable quantity in the blood.
Sweeteners (fake sugar) are allowed in diabetics or people on a diet, and are very low in calories.

symptoms
Disorder felt by a person with an illness. The same symptom can translate different diseases and the same disease does not necessarily give the same symptoms in all patients.
