Acid reflux, heartburn... These are two typical symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD occurs when some of the acidic contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus. Heartburn is a widespread digestive disorder, regardless of age or gender. Everyone is subject to heartburn at least once in their lives. Although generally not serious, heartburn can sometimes considerably alter daily life, especially when aggravated by stress.
Heartburn often stems from "digestive stress".
Digestive stress refers to 2 types of stress whose repercussions are felt during digestion, and are generally grouped together in what are known as functional digestive disorders.

  • Dietary stress, which encompasses all bad eating habits that can lead to heartburn, bloating, diarrhoea and so on.
  • Environmental stress, which is generally associated with psychosomatic disorders and unhealthy lifestyles.

The combination of these factors can lead to digestive disorders in predisposed individuals, with manifestations in the liver, intestine, oesophagus or colon.

GLOSSARY (summary)

antacids
A drug that neutralizes the acidity of gastric secretions or blocks the glands responsible for acid secretion.

antibiotics
A substance capable of blocking the multiplication of certain bacteria or killing them. The spectrum of an antibiotic is the set of bacteria on which this product is usually active. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not susceptible to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were extracted from mushroom cultures: penicillium (penicillin), streptomyces (streptomycin). They are currently manufactured by chemical synthesis. Antibiotics are divided into families: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines (cyclines), sulphonamides, aminoglycosides, lincosanides, phenicolates, polymyxins, quinolones, imidazoles, etc.
Inappropriate use of antibiotics may lead to the development of resistance: use antibiotics only on medical prescription, adhere to its dosage and duration, do not give or advise another person an antibiotic prescribed for you .

renal failure
Inability of the kidneys to eliminate waste or medicinal substances. Advanced renal insufficiency does not necessarily result in a decrease in the amount of urine excreted. Only a blood test and creatinine dosage may reveal this disease.

dosage
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

gastroesophageal reflux
Raising the gastric juice in the esophagus and in the back of the throat, favored by the extended position after meals, by leaning forward, by wearing clothes that compress the abdomen. This reflux is sometimes due to a hiatal hernia.

salt
Chemical substance of which the best known is sodium chloride, or table salt. The diet salt does not contain sodium; this is generally replaced by potassium.

sodium
An inorganic substance which can form salts, especially with chlorine (sodium chloride, or table salt).
