Should I go to the doctor if I have a sore throat?

A sore throat usually appears very quickly, but fortunately disappears just as quickly. However, if the following signs appear, a visit to your doctor is advisable:

  • When the sore throat lasts for more than a week and does not subside.
  • When the sore throat keeps coming back.
  • When you feel abnormally ill or suffer from specific disorders (e.g. skin rash, fever lasting more than three days, swollen painful glands in the neck, inability to swallow or eat, etc.).

Lysopaine packaging

2 tubes of 18 suckable tablets available in mint (classic Lysopaine), honey/lemon and strawberry flavors.

Our advice and expert opinions

To soothe sore throats, we also recommend :

  • take natural vitamin C (Acerola) when tired;
  • use a humidifier at home (a humidity level of 40-50% is recommended);
  • maintain an indoor temperature of 20°C;
  • drink plenty of water: consume lots of small quantities of cold liquids (you can also suck on ice cubes);
  • breathe fresh air regularly and cover up if it's cold outside.

It is also essential to avoid drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco or staying in smoky rooms, and using air-conditioning units, which emit cold air and dry out the mucous membranes.

LEXICON (summary)

quaternary ammoniums
Family of antiseptics present in many drugs of local use. Generally well tolerated, they can however give rise to rare allergies.

antibiotic
Substance capable of blocking the multiplication of certain bacteria or killing them. The spectrum of an antibiotic is the set of bacteria on which this product is usually active. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not sensitive to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were extracted from fungal cultures: penicillium (penicillin), streptomyces (streptomycin). They are currently produced by chemical synthesis. Antibiotics are divided into families: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines (cyclins), sulfonamides, aminoglycosides, lincosanides, phenicolés, polymyxins, quinolones, imidazoles, etc.
Inappropriate use of antibiotics can promote the development of resistance: use an antibiotic only on prescription, respect its dosage and duration, do not give and do not advise another person an antibiotic that you have been prescribed .

antiseptic
A substance that destroys bacteria locally, reducing their numbers and preventing their proliferation. Some antiseptics are also active on microscopic fungi and viruses.

mouth ulcers
Very painful lesion of the mouth, having the appearance of a yellowish or gray spot, slightly hollowed out. The healing is usually spontaneous after a few days.
Stress, fatigue and certain foods (nuts, hazelnuts, gruyere, citrus fruits ...) can cause an outbreak of canker sores. In very rare cases, canker sores may be due to disease or medication.

mouthwash
Drug that acts by contact on the back of the throat and the inner walls of the mouth. It is administered by spraying or whitewashing.

enzyme
Substance capable of activating a specific chemical reaction.

gargle
Local treatment that aims to leave the drug in the back of the throat pure or diluted in cold or warm water. It is practiced with the head tilted back, a continuous expiration preventing the liquid from descending into the lungs. The solution used should not be swallowed.

pharyngitis
Inflammation or infection of the pharynx.

Allergic reaction
Reaction due to the hypersensitivity of the body to a drug. Allergic reactions can be very varied: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, rash of measles-like pimples, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort by sudden drop in blood pressure.
