Imodium liquicaps capsule is indicated for the short-term treatment of acute transient diarrhoea in adults and children over 15 years of age.

For warnings, precautions for use and contraindications for Imodium liquicaps 12 capsules, please consult the package leaflet.

Description

Imodium liquicaps capsule is indicated for the short-term treatment of transient acute diarrhea in adults and children over 15 years of age. This treatment complements dietary measures.

Acute transient diarrhea
Acute diarrhea is characterized by a sudden change in stool frequency and consistency.
In practice, diarrhea occurs when there are more than 3 loose or liquid stools per day.
Other signs may be associated: nausea and/or vomiting, abdominal pain (cramps), even fever.
You need to be vigilant, as transient acute diarrhea, especially if accompanied by vomiting, can lead to complications such as dehydration, especially in the elderly.

Composition

  • Loperamide hydrochloride: 2 mg per softgel capsule
  • Excipients :
  1. Capsule: propylene glycol monocaprylate, propylene glycol, purified water.
  2. Capsule shell: Gelatin, glycerol 99%, propylene glycol, FCF brilliant blue (E133), soya lecithin, medium-chain triglycerides.

Directions for use

Route of administration: Oral

  • For adults and children over 15 years of age.
  • Start with 2 capsules of 4 mg loperamide in a single dose.
  • If diarrhea continues: after each loose stool, take 1 additional capsule.
  • In all cases, never exceed 6 capsules a day, and never exceed 2 days' treatment.
  • Swallow capsules with a glass of water.

What happens in the case of temporary acute diarrhoea?
When the cells of your small intestine or colon are irritated, the regular movement of your intestines can become hyperactive. Essential minerals and fluids, as well as nutrients from the food you've eaten, pass too quickly through the colon. With less fluid absorbed by the body, stools are soft or watery, known as diarrhea.

Precautions for use

Contraindications:

  • If you suffer from chronic bowel or colon disease, particularly during acute attacks of ulcerative colitis (inflammatory disease of the rectum and sometimes the large intestine, manifested by diarrhea with mucus and blood).
  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the capsule.
  • If you have a high fever (above 38°C), or if you have blood in your stools or are vomiting.
  • If your diarrhea occurs after taking antibiotics.
  • If you are constipated or have abdominal swelling.
  • In children under 15 years of age.

Precaution:

  • You must stop this treatment and consult your doctor as soon as possible in the following cases: in the event of fever, vomiting, the presence of blood or mucus in the stools, if there is no improvement after 2 days of treatment, in the event of constipation or abdominal distension, but also in the event of intense thirst or a sensation of a dry tongue. These last two symptoms indicate the onset of dehydration, i.e. significant fluid loss due to diarrhea. Your doctor will then decide whether you need oral or intravenous rehydration.
  • Use with caution: consult your doctor if you have liver disease, as medical supervision is necessary during treatment.
  • Diarrhea leads to loss of fluids and mineral salts. It is therefore necessary to rehydrate with plenty of salty or sweet drinks to compensate for fluid losses due to diarrhea (drink at least 2 liters). You should also avoid raw vegetables, fruit, green vegetables, spicy foods and dairy products, as well as iced foods and beverages, in favor of grilled meats and white rice.
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take this medicine without consulting your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine should only be used during pregnancy on the advice of your doctor. If you discover that you are pregnant during treatment, consult your doctor, who is the only person who can decide whether or not to continue treatment. Breast-feeding remains possible during brief treatment with this drug.
  • Caution: this drug may cause discrete, transient drowsiness or dizziness, which may be dangerous when driving or operating machinery.
  • Keep out of reach and sight of children.
  • Do not use after expiration date.
  • Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.

GLOSSARY (summary)

antibiotics
A substance capable of blocking the multiplication of certain bacteria or killing them. The spectrum of an antibiotic is the set of bacteria on which this product is usually active. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not susceptible to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were extracted from mushroom cultures: penicillium (penicillin), streptomyces (streptomycin). They are currently manufactured by chemical synthesis. Antibiotics are divided into families: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines (cyclines), sulphonamides, aminoglycosides, lincosanides, phenicolates, polymyxins, quinolones, imidazoles, etc.
Inappropriate use of antibiotics may lead to the development of resistance: use antibiotics only on medical prescription, adhere to its dosage and duration, do not give or advise another person an antibiotic prescribed for you .

diarrhea
The strict medical sense of diarrhea is "emission of stools too frequent and too abundant". In fact, common sense equates diarrhea with the notion of fluid and frequent stools. Normally, stools are pasty, but the emission of liquid or barely formed stools, without pain or particular associated disorder, is not pathological. Diarrhea can occur when liquid stool emissions are repeated during the day and the needs are overwhelming or painful.
Many medicines can accelerate intestinal transit and make the stools more liquid, without this undesirable effect being of real concern.
Antibiotics can alter the digestive flora, essential for digestion, and cause more or less troublesome but benign diarrhea. The effect appears immediately or after a few days of treatment. A severe and exceptional form of diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, can be observed after antibiotic treatment; this condition results in the emission of mucus and false membranes (resembling skin flaps) associated with abdominal pain; constipation may replace the initial diarrhea. Pseudomembranous colitis can occur several days after discontinuation of antibiotic treatment and requires urgent medical advice.

Hepatic insufficiency
Inability of the liver to perform its function, which is essentially the elimination of some waste, but also the synthesis of many biological substances essential to the body: albumin, cholesterol and coagulation factors (vitamin K, etc.).

dosage
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to hypersensitivity of the organism to a drug. Allergic reactions can take a wide variety of aspects: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, eruption of pimples resembling measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

ulcerative colitis
Inflammatory disease of the rectum and colon, which evolves by flare-ups. Each flare is accompanied by fever, bloody stools.

intestinal transit
Feeding from the stomach to elimination in the form of stool.

fear of heights
Symptom that can mean an impression of loss of balance (common sense) or, more strictly, a sense of rotation on oneself or the environment (medical sense).
