Gemmotherapy is an alternative medicine derived from phytotherapy, which uses the buds and young shoots of trees and shrubs. Bud macerates are the result of macerating fresh buds harvested in spring, at a key moment in their natural development cycle, in a mixture of water, alcohol and glycerine. The bud extracts obtained are called glycerol macerates.
The use of plant buds dates back to the Middle Ages, when alchemists made ointments and syrups to treat respiratory ailments.
However, it wasn't until 1970 that gemmotherapy officially made its appearance in the pharmacopoeia, thanks to the published work of Belgian physician Pol Henry. Indeed, he was the first to hypothesize that embryonic plant tissues should contain all the energy needed for tree development. He called this discovery"phytembryotherapy".
The first bud extract he studied was that of the Pubescent Birch (Betula pubescens).
Buds and young shoots contain all the power of the future plant. In fact, they constitute the plant's entire genetic heritage, providing it with all its properties. In phytotherapy, all the plant's active and useful molecules make up the totum. Lime blossom glycerol macerate, for example, has the sedative properties of its flowers and the purifying properties of its sapwood.
Plant embryonic tissues are incredibly rich in nutrients: growth hormones, vitamins, minerals, trace elements...
Gemmotherapy is a natural therapy that can be used safely at any age. It has a wide field of application, and can be used for a wide range of therapeutic indications. Did you know, for example, that gemmotherapy can be used to combat cellulite?
Extracts of buds and young shoots can be found in two main types of gemmotherapy products:
For best results, buds should be taken directly on the tongue outside mealtimes. Ideally, the glycerol macerate should be held in the mouth for a few seconds before swallowing. It can also be diluted in a little water or honey.
Start with 5 drops on the first day, then gradually increase the dosage to 15 or even 20 drops. Once your symptoms have disappeared, keep the same number of drops for the rest of the cure, without increasing the dosage. A minimum 3-week course of treatment is often recommended, repeated 3 times with a one-week break between each course.
A 30 ml bottle of glycerol macerates is sufficient for a cure of around a month, at a rate of 10 to 15 drops a day. You can take a maximum of 2 to 3 buds simultaneously (in the same glass of water) or separately at different times of the day. Normally, your therapist will give you the correct dosage for your particular problem.
There may be some contraindications to gemmotherapy, particularly for pregnant women. In early pregnancy, it is advisable to consult a health professional before taking buds. To be on the safe side, it's best to opt for alcohol-free gemmotherapy.
What's more, certain buds are not recommended for people with a heart condition or those suffering from coagulation disorders or high blood pressure. If you are taking a medical treatment, make sure that buds do not interact with it.
