Osteoarthritis is a chronic joint disease that begins with the breakdown of cartilage. Any joint can be affected, but it is at the level of the lower limbs that osteoarthritis is the most disabling.
Osteoarthritis of the knee (or knee osteoarthritis) is the primary cause of osteoarthritis complaints. It affects the femoro-patellar (or femoro-patellar) joint, between the femur and the patella, or the femorotibial joint, between the femur and the tibia. Osteoarthritis of the knee evolves by "crises" or painful inflammatory flares which follow one another at an unpredictable rhythm, variable in time and according to the patients. Both knees are affected two out of three times.
