The main types of muscle pain

Muscle pain can be found in a wide range of situations: cramps, aches, strains, contractures, muscle tears, lumbago, torticollis.

  • A cramp is violent, unexpected and temporary muscle pain. Cramp results in functional impotence: the muscle or muscle group concerned can no longer function normally and play its role.
  • Stiffness is common after heavy, unusual exertion. They appear within 2 days of exertion.

These muscular aches and pains are not serious, and heal on their own within a week or so: curing aches and pains is relatively easy.

  • Stretching is a sudden lengthening of the muscle that causes severe, instant pain. They can occur during violent effort, after a blow or when cold. The pain is localized when hot, but can become diffuse later on, being imperceptible at rest. To treat a strain, rest is imperative: the length of time varies according to the extent of the strain.
  • Contractures can lead to tearing if, despite the pain, the muscle continues to exert itself. To treat a contracture, you need to stop and rest.

How to prevent muscle pain?

To prevent muscle pain naturally, it's essential to adopt healthy habits and take good care of your body. Here are a few tips to help you avoid these discomforts:

  1. Warming up and stretching: Before starting any physical activity, it's essential to warm up properly to prepare muscles and joints for exertion. Stretching after exercise relaxes muscles and reduces pain.
  2. Hydration: Drinking enough water throughout the day is crucial to maintaining muscle health and recovery.
  3. Balanced diet: A diet rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins is essential to ensure proper muscle function and prevent soreness.
  4. Rest: Giving your body time to rest and recover is fundamental to avoiding muscle pain. We recommend getting enough sleep and taking rest days between training sessions.
  5. Posture: Adopting good posture on a daily basis, whether sitting, standing or walking, can help prevent muscular pain linked to poor posture.
  6. Massages: Regular massages or the use of a massage roller can help relax muscles and prevent pain.
  7. Stress management: Learning to manage stress is also beneficial in preventing muscular tension. The practice of meditation, yoga or deep breathing can help reduce stress.
