The main types of muscle pain

  • Muscle pain can be found in a wide range of situations: cramps, aches, strains, contractures, muscle tears, lumbago, torticollis.
  • A muscle cramp is violent, unexpected and temporary. Cramp results in functional impotence: the muscle or muscle group concerned can no longer function normally and play its role.
  • Muscle soreness is common after heavy, unusual exertion. They appear within 2 days of the effort. These muscular aches and pains are not serious, and heal on their own within a week or so: treating muscle soreness is relatively easy.
  • Stretching is a sudden lengthening of the muscle that causes severe, instant pain. They can occur during violent effort, after a blow or when cold. The pain is localized when hot, but can become diffuse later on, being imperceptible at rest. To treat a strain, rest is imperative: the length of time varies according to the extent of the strain.
  • Contractures can lead to tearing if, despite the pain, the muscle continues to exert itself. To treat a contracture, you need to stop and rest.

How to avoid muscle contractures?

Muscle contractures are a source of pain and limitation, whether they occur during sports or everyday activities. So it's crucial to understand the factors that can lead to contractures, and to take preventive measures to avoid them.

First and foremost, you need to warm up before any physical activity, however light. Warming up prepares muscles by increasing their temperature and elasticity, thereby reducing the risk of injury. In addition, stretching at the end of the session helps release muscular tension and prevent soreness. Next, it's important to stay hydrated throughout the day, as dehydration can lead to muscle cramps. Regular stretching is also beneficial for maintaining muscle flexibility.

In addition, it's advisable to vary exercises and avoid always using the same muscle groups. By varying activities, the whole body is stimulated and overuse of certain muscles is avoided. Finally, it's essential to take care of your body in general, by adopting a balanced diet, avoiding prolonged static positions and limiting sources of stress. These measures help to maintain good muscular health and prevent contractures.

In short, to prevent muscular contractures, it's essential to warm up, stretch, stay hydrated, massage and vary exercises, and take care of your body as a whole. By adopting these habits, you'll considerably reduce the risk of muscular contractures and be able to enjoy your physical activities and everyday life to the full.

GLOSSARY (summary)

allergy
Skin reaction (itching, pimples, swelling) or general discomfort occurring after contact with a particular substance, use of a medication, or ingestion of food. The main forms of allergy are eczema, urticaria, asthma, angioedema and allergic shock (anaphylactic shock). Food allergy can also result in digestive disorders.

analgesic
Medication that works against pain. Analgesics act either directly on the centers of pain in the brain or by blocking the transmission of pain to the brain.
Synonym: analgesic.

antecedents
Affection healed or always in evolution. The antecedent may be personal or family. The background is the history of a person's health.

convulsions
Involuntary contractions limited to a few muscles or generalized to the whole body. They are due to excessive pain or stimulation of the brain: fever, poisoning, lack of oxygen, brain damage. Convulsions may be due to an epileptic seizure or high fever in young children.

epilepsy
A chronic seizure disorder associated with abnormal electrical activity of a group of brain cells. Its manifestations, varying in intensity, range from the sudden drop in attention (absences, or small evil) to loss of consciousness accompanied by abnormal muscle movements (convulsions, or great evil). Partial epilepsy, as its name implies, does not concern the whole body: the jerky movements only touch one or more muscle groups.

mucous
Tissue (membrane) that lines the cavities and ducts of the body communicating with the outside (digestive tract, respiratory tract, urinary tract, etc.).

infant
Child from one to 30 months. A child under one month is a newborn.

dosages
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

Allergic reaction
Reaction due to hypersensitivity of the organism to a drug. Allergic reactions can take a wide variety of aspects: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, eruption of pimples resembling measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

repellent
Substance or technique intended to cause an influx of blood into the skin near a diseased organ in order to relieve it (suction cups, mustard poultice). Currently, these methods are less used and the term revulsive essentially concerns medicines for local use which cause dilation of the blood vessels of the skin.

salicylate
A family of drugs, the best known of which is acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).

terpenes
A general term for aromatic substances of vegetable origin. These are traditionally used for their respiratory properties (stimulating, expectorant, antiseptic) and their revulsive power when applied to the skin. The most used are camphor, menthol, eucalyptol, essential oils of mint, turpentine, niaouli, pine, anise, etc.
Some terpenes, and especially camphor, have been responsible for convulsions, respiratory pauses in the infant, in case of overdose. They can also cause behavioral problems in the elderly. These products should be used with caution at the extreme ages of life.

treatment
Treatment that complements the action of a specific treatment, but generally does not achieve healing on its own.
