Our expert opinion
Who hasn't had mouth ulcers, abscesses or inflamed gums? These commonplace mouth aches are no less annoying for the pain they cause. And some are not as benign as you might think.
It is estimated that nearly eight out of ten French people will suffer from mouth ulcers, gingivitis, thrush, abscesses or other mouth diseases.
- A canker sore is an ulceration of the oral mucosa. It is characterized by a loss of yellowish substance surrounded by a red circle. It results, in fact, from a small artery becoming blocked by an inflammatory reaction, and then necrotizing.
- If gingivitis sets in, the gums may recede, revealing the usually protected neck of the tooth. Teeth then become more sensitive to hot and cold. Left untreated, gingivitis can degenerate into periodontitis (inflammation of deeper tissues, such as bone), leading to loosening or even loss of teeth.
Harmless if accidentally swallowed, it can be used more than 3 times a day if pain persists.
