Dermatology:
Local adjunctive treatment of superficial burns of small extent.
Rhinology:
Local adjunctive treatment for nosebleeds.

Description of HEC Dermal and Nasal Ointment 25g tube

HEC Dermal and Nasal Ointment is an ointment with multiple properties: it is hemostatic, protective and soothing. HEC Ointment is used in the adjunctive treatment of superficial burns and nosebleeds.

Directions for use and advice on HEC Ointment for cutaneous and nasal application

Dermatology: 1 or 2 applications per day.
Rhinology: impregnate nasal wicks.

Composition of HEC Nasal Burn Ointment

Phenazone (INN) 187.5 mg
Witch hazel, fluid extract 187.5 mg
Tannic acid 3,125 g

Excipients: balsam of Peru, pectin, purified water, lanolin, glycerol behenate, medium-chain triglycerides (Labrafac CC).

Precautions for use with HEC local treatment of nosebleeds

  • Phenazone-containing products may cause acute hemolysis in subjects with G6PD enzyme deficiency.
  • As a matter of principle, use should therefore take this risk into account, and the use of an alternative therapy, if available, is recommended.
  • If the use of this drug is necessary, the occurrence of hemolysis should be detected.
  • Nasal burn ointment contains Peruvian balsam and lanolin (wool fat), and may cause skin reactions (e.g. eczema).

This medicine is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients listed in the Composition section, in particular pyrazoles, Peruvian balsam, wool grease (or lanolin);
  • oxygen therapy, due to the risk of burns associated with the ointment's fat content;
  • infected lesions.

Presentation of HEC ointment

HEC Dermal and Nasal Ointment comes in a 25g tube.

Your expert pharmacist's advice

A burn is a tissue lesion often caused by contact with a heat source over a period of time. Burns come in different degrees of severity: 1st degree (sunburn-type, with a bright red, painful lesion) & 2nd degree superficial (blistering).

How to assess the severity of a burn?

First-degree burns affect the epidermis of the skin, and are characterized by redness, heat and pain for 72 hours, sometimes followed by desquamation. They may give rise to a slight fever, and disappear without after-effects in 4 to 5 days.

Second-degree burns: these can be recognized by the presence of blisters on the skin, or phlyctenes.

Beneath the blister, the skin may turn crimson red (as it remains vascularized) if the burn is superficial. In this case, the burn heals spontaneously within 1 week to 10 days. If the skin has turned white, surgery is required to treat the burn.

Third-degree burns: Burns appear as hard, painless patches, as all nerve endings have been destroyed.

Any burn that has not healed after 21 days must be treated surgically.

How do I treat nosebleeds with HEC nasal ointment?

In rhinology (nosebleeds), treat nosebleeds using nasal wicks impregnated with HEC ointment.

  • Do not lean your head back while bleeding, to avoid swallowing or inhaling blood.
  • Do not take aspirin, which may increase bleeding.
  • Do not blow your nose for 2 to 3 hours after bleeding.
