GLOSSARY Â (summary)

horny © e
Transparent central part of the eye, which covers the pupil and the iris.

cul-de-sac conjunctival
Space formed when pulling down the lower eyelid, which is detached from the eye and forms a cavity. It is in this that the drops of eye drops and the ophthalmic ointments must be deposited. The medication naturally resembles the whole of the eye. It will be eliminated, like tears, by the lacrimal canal, which escapes tears towards the nose.

contact lenses
A flexible or rigid optical device placed on the cornea, intended to correct a defect in vision.
The lenses currently used are all made of plastic. There are two types:
  • Rigid lenses, more or less permeable to oxygen. Their small diameter (they do not cover the whole of the cornea) facilitates the oxygenation of the cornea: the oxygen contained in the tears can diffuse under and around the lens.
  • Soft lenses, more or less hydrophilic. They are easier to withstand at the beginning, but their large diameter and limited oxygen permeability do not facilitate oxygenation of the cornea. They can pose long-term tolerance problems.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to body hypersensitivity to a drug. Allergic reactions can include very varied aspects: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, eruption of pimples reminding the measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort by sudden drop in blood pressure.

treatment
Treatment that complements the action of a specific treatment, but generally does not achieve healing on its own.

vitamin
Essential to the growth and proper functioning of the body. Vitamin requirements are normally covered by a varied diet. In developed countries, only vitamin D deficiency, in young children or the elderly who are not exposed to sunlight, justifies systematic supplementation. Superior intake, especially medications, can lead to overdosage and various disorders (mainly vitamin A and D).
