Ergoform , from Donjoy, is a universal thumb splint used in particular in the event of a sprain or osteoarthritis of the thumb . Its use is very simple and this splint is very comfortable. This orthosis provides protection for the thumb and wrist joint in the event of acute or chronic pain.

Description of the Donjoy Ergoform Thumb Splint

  • Thumb protection and support
  • Thumb sprains, dislocations
  • De Quervain's tendonitis
  • Metacarpophalangeal osteoarthritis

The thumb orthosis is indicated to reduce the mobility and increase the stability of the joints of the hand in the case of rhizarthrosis and benign sprains of the thumb . Immobilization can be partial and simple or firmer.

Indications for Wrist-Thumb Splints

This orthopedic material is prescribed by doctors after diagnosis in the following cases: strains, post-surgical immobilization, immobilization of metacarpophalangeal joints of the thumb in abduction, articular or ligament lesions of the hand and thumb, rhizarthroses.

A thumb sprain is the lesion of the ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb: the ulnar lateral ligament (= medial side of the thumb). During the practice of certain sports (handball, volleyball, skiing or surfing), this lesion can occur following a shock imposing on the thumb an outward movement of the hand. The position of the thumb is forced beyond the natural maximum distance that exists between the thumb and the hand, the ligament stretches and the sprain occurs. It is also called "skier's sprain".

Attention, a sprained thumb can sometimes be accompanied by a fracture at the base of the 1st phalanx.

If the thumb is not immobilized in the event of a thumb sprain, there is a risk of joint instability, with reduced grip strength and abnormal movements. Due to these movements and the abnormal functioning of the joint, osteoarthritis of the thumb may appear in the long term. Osteoarthritis is indicated by the reappearance of recurrent pain.
