Our expert opinion
What is earwax?
Earwax protects the ear canal and helps eliminate bacteria and dust. Sometimes, however, it accumulates in the ear canal and clogs it. This may be due to an increase in earwax production, or to poor evacuation. In all cases, the blockage can cause annoying symptoms (reduced hearing, mild pain).
What is an earwax impaction?
A cerumen block is an unusual accumulation of this substance in the ear canal.
Waxy in consistency and yellow to brown in color, earwax is produced by specific glands known as "ceruminous" glands, found in the skin of the ear canal. It also contains sebum and squames (small dead skin cells).
Its role is to protect the walls of the ear canal from any water that might penetrate, and to trap foreign bodies (e.g. dust) and bacteria, which are then eliminated thanks to cerumen's antibacterial properties.
Normally, this substance is gradually expelled towards the entrance of the auditory canal by jaw movements during chewing. Occasionally, however, earwax forms a plug that obstructs the ear canal.
