Our advice and expert opinions in pharmacy

Melatonin or N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, often referred to as the sleep hormone, is best known as the central hormone regulating chronobiological rhythms, being synthesized mainly at night. It regulates many hormonal secretions, in humans and all mammals. This neurohormone is synthesized from the neurotransmitter serotonin, itself derived from tryptophan. It is secreted by the pineal gland (in the brain) in response to the absence of light.

Melatonin appears to have multiple functions, other than its hormonal role, in particular as an antioxidant. It is thought to play a particular role in protecting nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. It also appears to play a role in the immune system.

Microbes and various plants also produce melatonin (known as phytomelatonin in the case of plants).

The most frequent and difficult-to-manage symptoms are :

  • difficulty falling asleep, sleep disorders, fatigue
  • disturbed appetite and digestive problems
  • headaches and difficulty concentrating
  • stress and mood disorders

Melatonin is a good option for minimizing the annoying effects of jet lag. Although it is not a cure, it can help you return to a regular sleep schedule in your new time zone. Using melatonin in combination with good hydration and exercise will help you get ready for your next big adventure!
