What is clary sage?
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is an aromatic and medicinal plant of the Lamiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean and Central Asian regions. Used since ancient times for its hormone-regulating, soothing and revitalizing properties, it is appreciated in phytotherapy, aromatherapy and natural cosmetics.

Unlike common sage, which contains thujone (neurotoxic in high doses), clary sage is milder and better tolerated, making it a preferred choice for hormonal balance, feminine well-being and nervous relaxation.

What are the benefits of clary sage?
Clary sage has many beneficial effects on body and mind:

  • Regulates the menstrual cycle and relieves premenstrual syndrome (PMS) → Helps reduce menstrual pain, irregular periods and hormonal imbalances.
  • Alleviates menopausal symptoms → Effective against hot flashes, night sweats and hormonal fatigue.
  • Soothes stress and anxiety → Its relaxing action promotes better emotional and mental balance.
  • Stimulates libido and improves sexual well-being → Acts as a natural female desire tonic.
  • Regulates sebum production and purifies the skin → Ideal for oily, acne-prone or blemish-prone skin.
  • Strengthens and revitalizes hair → Prevents hair loss linked to hormonal imbalances and stimulates hair growth.
  • Promotes restful sleep → Its soothing fragrance helps calm mental agitation and insomnia.
  • Supports digestion and combats bloating → Stimulates the production of digestive enzymes and facilitates the assimilation of food.

How to use clary sage?
Clary sage can be consumed or applied in several forms according to need:

Clary sage essential oil
Massage (diluted in vegetable oil) → To balance hormones and relieve menstrual pain.
In diffusion → To reduce anxiety, improve mood and promote restful sleep.
In a relaxing bath → A few drops in bath water to soothe nervous and muscular tension.
Infusion or decoction of clary sage leaves
For the menstrual cycle and menopause → Regulates hormonal imbalances and reduces menstrual pain.
For digestion → Drink one cup after meals to prevent intestinal spasms and bloating.
Recipe: infuse 1 teaspoon of dried leaves in a cup of hot water for 10 minutes.

Cosmetics and hair care
As a facial toner → Purifies the skin and regulates excess sebum.
As a hair mask → Applied to the scalp, it stimulates hair growth and prevents hair loss.
As a dietary supplement (capsules, extracts)
As a natural hormone cure → Used to alleviate symptoms of menopause and PMS.
As an emotional support → Helps reduce nervous fatigue and chronic stress.

Is clary sage effective against female hormonal disorders?
Yes, clary sage is one of the best plants for regulating female hormones:

  • Balances estrogen and progesterone, thus acting on the menstrual cycle and menopause.
  • Reduces menstrual pain by reducing inflammation and uterine spasms.
  • Alleviates the effects of PMS, including irritability, fatigue and water retention.
  • Prevents vaginal dryness by stimulating natural lubrication.

It is often combined with other hormone-regulating herbs, such as chasteberry and yarrow.

Does clary sage improve skin and hair?
Yes, it is recognized for its purifying and balancing effects:

  • Regulates sebum production, limiting the appearance of pimples and blackheads.
  • Soothes skin inflammation, helping to reduce redness and imperfections.
  • Stimulates scalp blood circulation, promoting better oxygenation of hair follicles.
  • Prevents hair loss, particularly in cases of hormonal imbalance.

It is often added to natural hair care products and purifying creams.

What's the difference between clary sage and common sage?
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) → Less aggressive, it is specifically used for hormonal balance, relaxation and feminine well-being.
Sage officinale (Salvia officinalis) → More concentrated in thujone, it is used for its digestive, stimulating and antiseptic properties, but can be toxic in high doses.
Clary sage is often preferred in aromatherapy and cosmetics, as it is better tolerated and gentler.

Where can I buy quality clary sage?
Clary sage products are available in :

  • Pharmacies and parapharmacies → In food supplements and liquid extracts.
  • Herbalists and organic stores → In the form of dried leaves, powder or essential oil.
  • Aromatherapy stores → For certified essential oils.
  • Specialized grocers → As infusions and herbal teas.

We recommend choosing organic and locally-grown products, guaranteeing a higher concentration of natural active ingredients.

Does clary sage have any contraindications?
Although mild and well-tolerated, clary sage should be used with caution:

  1. Not recommended for pregnant and breast-feeding women, due to its effects on estrogen.
  2. The essential oil should not be applied undiluted to the skin, but always diluted.
  3. Avoid in cases of hormonal treatment or hormone-dependent cancer.
  4. Do not ingest without medical advice, especially in essential oil form.
