What is lavandin and why is it so popular?
Lavandin (Lavandula hybrida) is an aromatic plant resulting from a cross between true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia). Grown mainly in Provence, it is renowned for its powerful fragrance and multiple therapeutic properties. Used in phytotherapy, aromatherapy and cosmetics, it stands out for its relaxing, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and respiratory effects.

Thanks to its rich camphor and linalool content, lavandin is particularly effective for soothing muscular tension, promoting nervous relaxation, stimulating blood circulation and purifying the skin. Its essential oil is widely used for relaxation, treating skin ailments and relieving muscle and joint pain.

What are the health and well-being benefits of lavender?
Lavandin is recognized above all for its relaxing and balancing properties on the nervous system. Its soothing fragrance promotes an immediate sense of well-being, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. Diffused into a room or applied as a massage, it creates a relaxing effect, ideal for calming mental agitation and facilitating sleep.

Lavandin is a powerful natural muscle and joint relaxant. Its high camphor content gives it warming and analgesic properties, ideal for relieving contractures, aches and pains associated with rheumatism. Its application as a massage after physical effort promotes recovery and soothes bodily tension.

Thanks to its antiseptic and healing action, lavandin essential oil is also used to treat small wounds, light burns, insect bites and skin conditions such as acne and eczema. It accelerates skin healing and protects against bacterial infection.

On the respiratory front, lavandin is an excellent natural expectorant and decongestant. It is particularly useful for colds, bronchitis and sinusitis, helping to eliminate mucus and clear the airways when used as an inhalant.

Finally, it is renowned for its insect-repellent properties. Its intense scent effectively repels mosquitoes, moths and other parasites, making it an ideal ally for sanitizing the home and protecting textiles.

How do I use lavender every day?
Lavandin can be used in a variety of ways: as an essential oil, infusion, hydrosol or local application.

Diffusion for relaxation and sleep
To benefit from its relaxing effects, lavandin essential oil can be diffused into a room:

  • Pour 5 to 10 drops into an ultrasonic diffuser.
  • Diffuse for 15 to 30 minutes before bedtime for a restful night's sleep.
  • Muscle and joint massage

To relieve muscular tension and pain:

  • Dilute 5 drops of lavandin essential oil in a tablespoon of vegetable oil (arnica, sweet almond, macadamia).
  • Apply with a circular massage to sore muscles or tense areas.
  • Inhalation to clear the respiratory tract

For nasal or bronchial congestion:

  • Add 5 drops of lavandin essential oil to a bowl of hot water.
  • Inhale the steam for 5 to 10 minutes, covering the head with a towel.
  • Skin care and small wounds

To soothe minor burns, cuts or insect bites:

  • Apply a drop of pure essential oil to the affected area (except for sensitive skin, where it is preferable to dilute in a vegetable oil).
  • As a natural insect repellent

To repel mosquitoes and moths:

  • Place a few drops of essential oil on a cotton pad in cupboards.
  • Mix with a vegetable oil and apply to the skin before going outdoors.

Does lavender have any side effects or contraindications?
Although lavandin is a natural product, it must be used with care, especially in its essential oil form. Because of its camphor content, it can be irritating to the respiratory tract and skin if used in high doses. Always dilute before use.

Its use is not recommended for pregnant and breast-feeding women, or for children under 6, due to the presence of ketones that can have a neurotoxic effect in high concentrations.

People with asthma or epilepsy should avoid direct inhalation, as it may trigger adverse reactions. It is advisable to test a small amount on the skin before use to check for allergies or irritation.

Finally, although it promotes relaxation, excessive use can cause slight drowsiness. It is therefore preferable to avoid applying it before activities requiring heightened alertness, such as driving.

How to choose quality lavender?
To reap the full benefits of lavender, it's essential to choose an essential oil that's 100% pure and natural, organically grown and pesticide-free.

  • Check the botanical name: choose Lavandula hybrida to make sure it's really lavandin and not another variety of lavender.
  • Choose low-temperature distillation, which preserves the active ingredients intact.
  • Opt for an organic essential oil, with no chemical additives.
  • Store in an amber glass bottle, to protect the essential oil from light and guarantee its stability.

Lavandin is available in pharmacies, organic stores and specialized stores, as essential oil, hydrolat, scented sachets or incorporated into cosmetics.
