What is saffron?

Saffron(Crocus sativus), often nicknamed "red gold", is a rare and precious spice extracted from the stigmas of the crocus flower. Originally fromAsia Minor, it is now grown mainly in Iran, India, Morocco, Spain and France.

Renowned for its unique flavor, vibrant color and numerous medicinal virtues, saffron has been used for centuries in cooking, phytotherapy and cosmetics. Its high price is explained by the meticulous harvesting and the quantity of flowers required to obtain a few grams of the spice.

What are the benefits of saffron?

Saffron is a spice with exceptional properties, acting on several aspects of health:

  • Improves mood and fights depression → Contains crocin and safranal, which increase the production of serotonin and dopamine, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and depressive disorders.
  • Stimulates memory and cognitive functions → Protects neurons from premature aging and improves concentration and information retention.
  • Powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory → Neutralizes free radicals, protects cells and limits chronic inflammatory processes.
  • Improves digestion → Promotes secretion of gastric juices, prevents bloating and stimulates liver detoxification.
  • Promotes eye health → The crocin it contains helps prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
  • Regulates the menstrual cycle and relieves pain → A natural soother, it helps reduce cramps and symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
  • Supports libido and fertility → Known for its aphrodisiac effects, it improves blood circulation and stimulates sexual response.
  • Protects the cardiovascular system → Helps regulate blood pressure, reduce bad cholesterol (LDL ) and improve blood circulation.

How to use saffron

Saffron can be consumed in a variety of forms depending on your needs:

In cooking

  • Infused in water or milk → Releases its aromas and active principles before being incorporated into a dish.
  • In traditional dishes → Paëlla, risotto, tajines, bouillabaisse, desserts, teas and infusions.
  • Combined with honey → Mixed with honey, it becomes a natural remedy against fatigue and stress.

In phytotherapy (food supplements)

  • In capsules or ampoules → Used for its natural relaxing and antidepressant effects.
  • In infusions → Blended with other plants for a soothing, digestive effect.

In cosmetics

  • In anti-aging skincare → Protects the skin against aging and oxidative stress.
  • In radiance masks → Brightens the complexion and reduces pigmentation spots.

Is saffron effective against depression and anxiety?

Yes, several studies have shown that saffron acts as a natural antidepressant by stimulating the production of serotonin and dopamine. It is used to :

  • Relieve mild to moderate depression.
  • Reduce anxiety and chronic stress.
  • Improve sleep quality and relaxation.

It is often compared to some conventional antidepressants, but without the undesirable side effects.

Does saffron help with weight loss?

Yes, saffron can be a slimming ally thanks to its appetite-suppressant and appetite-regulating properties:

  • Reduces cravings by acting on serotonin, thus limiting sugar cravings and snacking.
  • Stimulates metabolism and promotes better fat digestion.
  • Regulates blood sugar levels, helping to prevent variations in blood sugar levels responsible for compulsive eating.

It is often used as a complement to a balanced diet and healthy nutrition.

What's the difference between saffron and turmeric?

  • Saffron is extracted from the stigmas of the crocus plant, which is highly fragrant and used for its antidepressant and aphrodisiac properties.
  • Turmeric comes from a more affordable rhizome, with recognized anti-inflammatory and digestive action.

Turmeric is sometimes called "turmeric", but these two spices have very different compositions and properties.

Where can I buy quality saffron?

Saffron is a very precious spice, often subject to counterfeiting. We advise you to buy it from certified producers in :

  • Delicatessens and organic stores → For saffron in stigmas (red threads) rather than in powder.
  • Specialized stores and herbalists → For quality food supplements and extracts.
  • Local agricultural cooperatives → In France, Quercy and Gâtinais saffron are renowned for their authenticity.

Choose saffron that is organic, of controlled origin and sold as pistils rather than powder, as the latter can be mixed with other substances to reduce cost.

Does saffron have any contraindications?

Although natural, saffron should be used with caution in certain cases:

  • Not recommended for pregnant women in large quantities → In large doses, it may cause uterine contractions.
  • Avoid in case of antidepressant treatment → It may interact with certain medications.
  • Beware of overdosing → Excessive consumption(more than 5 g per day) can lead to side effects such as headaches, nausea or drowsiness.

The recommended dose is around 30 mg a day to enjoy its benefits without risk.
