Bumps and bruises in your online organic pharmacy

Mostly benign, bumps, bruises and other contusions are nonetheless painful and unsightly. You can limit the damage easily with a little care as soon as possible.

Perhaps you're surrounded by intrepid toddlers? Or maybe you're simply clumsy and often bump into the corner of the table or the office wastepaper basket? Or maybe you're just the unlucky one who keeps bumping into doors. Either way, a bump is an accident waiting to happen.

In fact, under the pressure of the blow, small blood vessels just under the skin burst and spread. This causes a slight, coloured swelling due to the blood that accumulates at the site of the blow. In the case of a bump, this discoloration is accompanied by more or less pronounced edema. Most of the time, bumps and bruises of all kinds can be treated at home, on your own.

Start by applying something cold to the wound. The aim is to reduce both the pain caused by the shock and the swelling. You can opt for a glove or sponge soaked in ice-cold water. Alternatively, wrap ice cubes in a cloth or plastic sheet and place over the bruise.

Ecchymosis, hematomas, bruises... bruises occur after a shock but are generally benign. Because light burns, blows and bumps are part of life's little accidents, Soin et Nature has created this category where you'll find all the care products you need to treat these ailments.

Sunburn during childhood has a major impact on the likelihood of developing skin cancer in adulthood. Prevention is better than cure. Avoid exposure during the hottest hours of the day, wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses - that's what we hear season after season. Unlike adults, young people have difficulty synthesizing the melanin that protects them from UV rays.

The right sun protection will

  • optimize your child's protection against the sun's UV rays.
  • prevent sunburn
  • soothe the upper layers of the skin

Here are a few tips to help you avoid the sun's harmful effects

  1. Avoid the scorching midday sun and prolonged sun exposure, as even high SPF sunscreens don't provide 100% protection.
  2. Apply generously before exposure to the sun and reapply frequently, especially after swimming, toweling off or perspiring, to maintain optimum protection. Applying too little sunscreen reduces its protective effect.
  3. Reapply at least every 2 hours and after every bath.

Burns: Identification and appropriate care

Types of burns

Burns are classified according to their severity:

  • Superficial burns (1st degree): only affect the epidermis, causing redness and pain, like sunburn.
  • Partial burns (2nd degree): Damage the epidermis and part of the dermis, often accompanied by blisters.
  • Deep burns (3rd degree): Affect all skin layers, even underlying tissues.

Immediate treatment

  1. Cooling: Run cold water (15-20°C) over the burned area for 10-20 minutes to limit the spread of lesions.
  2. Protection: Cover the burn with a sterile dressing or clean cling film to prevent contamination.
  3. Relief: Apply a soothing gel or healing cream based on panthenol or aloe vera to reduce pain and promote skin regeneration.

When to seek medical advice

  • If the burn covers a large area or is located on the face, hands, feet or joints.
  • For chemical, electrical or deep burns.

Cuts and bumps: Recognition and treatment

Cuts and bumps often cause localized pain, swelling (edema) and bruising due to the rupture of small blood vessels. Joints and muscles can also be affected, limiting movement.

Treatment method: GREC

  • Ice: Apply an ice bag or cold pack wrapped in a cloth to the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day.
  • Rest: Reduce movement to avoid aggravating the injury.
  • Elevation: Elevate the injured area to limit fluid accumulation.
  • Compression: Wrap the area with an elastic bandage to reduce swelling.

Arnica- or ibuprofen-based creams or gels can be applied to relieve pain and speed up bruise resolution.
