In bees :
- treatment of varroasis in honeybees (Apis mellifera) caused by Varroa destructor.

What is Thymovar used for?

In bees: treatment of varroasis in honeybees (Apis mellifera) caused by Varroa destructor. Varroa destructor is a parasitic mite of adult bees, as well as larvae and pupae. It originates from Southeast Asia, where it lives at the expense of the Asian honeybee Apis cerana, which is resistant to its attacks, unlike the European honeybee Apis mellifera. This parasite causes major economic losses in beekeeping, and is one of the causes of the decline in bee numbers. Having colonized virtually all areas where Apis mellifera is present, varroasis is now a worldwide problem.

Thymovar is an over-the-counter veterinary medicine specially designed to effectively combat Varroa mites, which threaten the health and survival of honey bees. Based on thymol, an active substance renowned for its acaricidal properties, Thymovar offers a gentle yet formidable solution to this plague. As it evaporates, the thymol released by the platelets permeates the hive atmosphere, neutralizing parasites without harming the bees.

Using Thymovar in apiaries with low to moderate Varroa infestation provides long-lasting protection and prevents reinfestation. This treatment is particularly recommended as a complement to flash treatments, such as those with Formicpro, to ensure a long-lasting protective barrier. Its specific formulation guarantees good tolerance by queen bees and brood, avoiding the undesirable side effects often associated with more aggressive treatments.

The choice of thymol as the active ingredient is not insignificant. This substance, extracted from thyme essential oil, is renowned for its anti-parasitic properties, as well as being a natural agent. Thymol acts directly on Varroa mites by disrupting their nervous system, resulting in their death without affecting the quality of the honey or the health of the bees. Thymovar, with its 15g of thymol per sachet, is dosed to maximize efficacy while ensuring safety of use.

Treatment with Thymovar is designed to be both effective and convenient. Easy-to-handle cloth sponge pads, placed in the hive, enable controlled release of thymol over an extended period. This method ensures continuous coverage against Varroa, minimizing the risk of reinfestation and promoting a healthy environment for colony development.

Choosing Thymovar to treat your hives means opting for an effective, natural solution that respects the lives of bees. Its active ingredient, thymol, offers a targeted response against Varroa, without compromising honey quality or colony health. Whether you're a professional or amateur beekeeper, Thymovar is a wise choice to protect your bees, ensure quality honey production and contribute to the preservation of this insect crucial to our biodiversity.

How to use Thymovar

Carefully following Thymovar 's instructions for use is essential to guarantee its effectiveness and the safety of your bees. Start by feeding the colony after harvesting the honey, then place the three Thymovar half-wafers directly on the frames, taking care to maintain a safe distance from the broods. Leave a 5 mm gap above the platelets to ensure optimum diffusion of the thymol.

After 3 to 4 weeks, remove the plates and start feeding the colony again. A second application of three half-wafers for 3 to 4 weeks is recommended for reinforced protection. Ideal outside temperatures for application are between 20 and 25°C. To ensure effective treatment, Thymovar should not be used when temperatures exceed 30°C.

Precautions for use

Handling Thymovar requires certain precautions to avoid the risk of skin and eye contact, which may cause irritation. In the event of contact, it is imperative to wash the affected area with soap and water, and to rinse eyes thoroughly in the event of splashing. We strongly advise you to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as coveralls, masks, goggles and resistant gloves when handling this product.
