Your pharmacist's advice
Mild, moderate or severe dandruff is very common, affecting both men and women. Dandruff conditions can appear at any time, and all hair types and scalps are affected. This excessive desquamation of the scalp is caused either by the colonization of a yeast (= fungus), or by a genetic terrain revealed by environmental factors.
Dandruff is caused by the unusual multiplication of a micro-organism of the Malassezia yeast family. This causes a much too rapid renewal ofepidermal cells, which clump together on the scalp. The result is large, peeling flakes of dandruff, or adherent, greasy, yellowish-grey dandruff.
Dandruff can cause scalp irritation and more or less intense itching sensations. Dandruff is visible in the hair and usually falls on the collar and shoulders, particularly when styling. Environmental factors such as pollution, stress or fatigue can promote or increase the proliferation of Malassezia and thus the appearance of dandruff.
Dry and oily dandruff are differentiated by their appearance, which can indicate the type of disorder involved.
When in doubt, and in the presence of severe dandruff, consult a dermatologist.
