Our advice and expert opinions in pharmacy

The term gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is little-known to the general public, but it does reflect a common condition. Burning, acidic reflux into the throat is common after meals or while lying down.

At least once in our lives, we've all felt acidic liquid rise from the stomach into the esophagus, and sometimes into the mouth, especially after a hearty meal. This is what's known as "physiological" gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), i.e. normal reflux.

When we refer to GERD as an ailment, it's because it's pathological, not physiological.

Pathological, i.e. abnormal, GERD is characterized by excessive acid reflux, which may be too prolonged and/or too frequent, leading over time to so-called peptic esophagitis (linked mainly to stomach acid).

LEXICON (summary)

NSAIDs
Abbreviation for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Family of anti-inflammatory drugs that are not derived from cortisone (steroids), and the best known is aspirin.

antacids
Drug that neutralizes the acidity of gastric secretions or blocks the glands responsible for the secretion of acid.

antibiotics
Substance capable of blocking the multiplication of certain bacteria or killing them. The spectrum of an antibiotic is the set of bacteria on which this product is usually active. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not susceptible to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were extracted from fungal cultures: penicillium (penicillin), streptomyces (streptomycin). They are currently manufactured by chemical synthesis. Antibiotics are divided into families: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines (cyclins), sulfonamides, aminoglycosides, lincosanides, phenicolates, polymyxins, quinolones, imidazoles, etc.
Inappropriate use of antibiotics can promote resistance: use an antibiotic only on prescription, respect its dosage and duration, do not give and do not advise another person an antibiotic that you have been prescribed .

dialysis
A method of purifying blood in cases of severe renal failure, provided mainly by the use of an artificial kidney.

diarrhea
The strict medical sense of diarrhea is "stool delivery too frequent and too abundant". In fact, common sense equates diarrhea with the notion of frequent, liquid stools. Normally, the stools are pasty, but the emission of liquid stools or barely formed, without pain or particular associated disorder, is not pathological. One can speak of diarrhea when the liquid stool emissions are repeated during the day, and that the needs are imperious or painful.
Many drugs can accelerate intestinal transit and make the stool more liquid, without this undesirable effect being really worrying.
Antibiotics can alter the digestive flora, essential for digestion, and cause diarrhea more or less troublesome but benign. The effect appears immediately or after a few days of treatment. A form of severe and exceptional diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, can be observed after antibiotic treatment; this condition results in the emission of mucus and false membranes (resembling skin flaps) associated with abdominal pain; constipation may replace the initial diarrhea. Pseudomembranous colitis can occur several days after stopping antibiotic treatment and requires urgent medical advice.

inflammation
Natural reaction of the organism against an element recognized as foreign. It manifests locally as redness, heat, pain or swelling.

renal failure
Inability of the kidneys to dispose of waste or drugs. Advanced renal failure does not necessarily result in a decrease in the amount of urine eliminated. Only a blood test and the determination of creatinine can reveal this disease.

mucous
Tissue (membrane) lining the cavities and ducts of the body communicating with the outside (digestive tract, respiratory system, urinary tract, etc.).

Allergic reaction
Reaction due to the hypersensitivity of the body to a drug. Allergic reactions can be very varied: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, rash of measles-like pimples, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort by sudden drop in blood pressure.

Gastroesophageal reflux
Raising of gastric juice in the esophagus and the back of the throat, favored by lying down after meals, by leaning forward, by wearing clothes that compress the abdomen. This reflux is sometimes due to a hiatal hernia.

symptoms
Disorder felt by a person with an illness. The same symptom can translate different diseases and the same disease does not necessarily give the same symptoms in all patients.

attack treatment
Treatment intended to obtain a rapid effect thanks to high doses.
