Our advice and expert opinions
Hormones are the group of biochemicals in our bodies that regulate growth and development, libido and reproductive function, metabolism, and (yes) mood too. When these chemical messengers become unbalanced, we experience a whole host of health problems. Such an imbalance can present symptoms such as irritability, poor digestion, fatigue and weight gain, many of which are often attributed to other causes. When poorly treated, these persistent problems can be very frustrating and ultimately discouraging.
Before going through menopause, women experience a period of hormonal transition known as premenopause. Symptoms of menopause are often very troublesome.
One of the most common menopausal problems, after hot flushes, is brittle bones and, in the longer term,osteoporosis...
Here is some naturopathic advice on how to look after your bones:
- Provide your body with the right sources of Calcium. Forget cottage cheese and milk. Why should you? Dairy products greatly acidify the body, and to buffer these acids, the body draws Calcium from our bones, which ends up weakening them and creating the opposite effect! Eat alkaline foods such as green vegetables, legumes, dried fruit, oilseeds and seaweed.
- Exercise! Bones need to be stimulated at any age to slow down bone loss: give priority to exercise with weights that will help strengthen bones, and thus maximize calcium fixation on them.
- Avoid sugar, salt, caffeine, tobacco and especially alcohol.
- Remember to add sources of phytoestrogens to your diet: soy, red clover and sources of Omega 3: oily fish (sardines, cod liver, etc.), rapeseed oil, linseed oil, etc., which act against inflammatory processes, also responsible for calcium loss.
