Our advice and expert opinions
Is constipation a regular problem when you're away on business, visiting friends or staying in hotels? There are simple ways to help regulate your transit.
Even if, at home, everything is generally fine, the simple fact of changing environment, of adopting a different rhythm of life, can be enough to make your intestinal transit capricious. And especially slowed down.
It's never pleasant. Bloating, a feeling of heaviness or even abdominal pain often accompany slowed transit. While these symptoms are benign most of the time, it's important to avoid slipping into chronic constipation, characterized by infrequent (less than three bowel movements a week) or difficult bowel movements for at least six months.
Constipation has a lot to do with the way we eat. In the vast majority of cases, adopting a high-fiber diet, drinking enough fluids and exercising can help overcome constipation or prevent it from occurring in the first place.
- The lack of fiber-rich foods in the diet (dried fruit, green vegetables, wholegrain cereals, legumes, etc.) is one of the most frequent risk factors for constipation.
- Foods that can cause constipation include bananas, chocolate, white rice, carrots, low-fiber potato urea, tea, quince, grapes, coconuts, oleaginous fruits, cereals and celery.
But changing eating habits takes time and isn't always enough. A laxative can help.
