Combantrin: A versatile dewormer to fight against intestinal parasites
Combantrin is an antiparasitic drug based on pyrantel, an antihelminthic substance. This vermifuge is accessible without a medical prescription to treat ascariasis, oxyuriasis and ankylostomiasis. This pest control is designed for adults and children 6 years and older. For the youngest, Combantrin is also offered in the form of syrup to adapt to the weight of the child. The main active substance is pyrantel embonate, dosed at 360.20 mg, which corresponds to a pyrantel base of 125.00 mg.
Other ingredients include alginic acid, corn starch (quantity expressed as dried product), sodium lauryl sulfate, magnesium stearate and sunset yellow aluminum lake S (E100).
Dosage of Combantrin: how to adapt the treatment according to the weight and the parasites?
The dosage of Combantrin depends on the weight of the patient and the type of parasites to be treated:
- Against pinworms and roundworms: 10 to 12 mg/kg in a single dose
- In children: 1 tablet for 10 kilos of weight
- In adults under 75 kg: 6 tablets
- In adults over 75 kg: 8 tablets
To prevent reinfestation, it is recommended to take a second dose after 3 weeks. It is important to treat all family members at the same time, as the infestation may be asymptomatic. Strict hygiene measures should also be applied, such as cleaning the anal area daily, brushing and trimming nails, changing underwear and pajamas regularly, and avoiding sandboxes potentially contaminated with animal droppings.
- Against hookworms: 20 mg/kg to be repeated for 2 to 3 days
- In children: 2 tablets for 10 kilos of weight
- In adults under 75 kg: 12 tablets
- In adults over 75 kg: 16 tablets
